Description

A weeklong drama precedes the greatly anticipated Easter season, beginning with a celebration of Christ's triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday, the Sunday be- fore Easter, typically mixes rejoicing as young and old shout, "Hosanna," to welcome the Messiah, with a darker background cast of foreboding. The music is often appropriately processional in nature, announcing the arrival of the King.

Maundy Thursday gets its name from the mandate, "This do in remembrance of me," given by Jesus to his apostles at the last supper, and like the Sunday previous, elicits conflicting emotions. Both the mutual love of fellowship and the opposing darkness of what is to come are noted, with the former greatly overwhelming the latter. It is largely a communion service, a reenactment of that final supper.

The depth of love and sorrow of "Good" Friday suffuse every moment of what is often, though not always, a midday service. The music is generally subdued and limited in its scope, perhaps gaining strength from its scarcity.

Finally, the Saturday Vigil service typically requires only a joyful postlude as the light bursts forth to a waiting people.
