Richard Strauss, who is best known for his operas and tone poems, also composed a large amount of songs throughout his life. As Franz Liszt had previously done with songs by Franz Schubert, Max Reger knew how to integrate the vocal part into the piano movement artfully, thus creating brilliant and effective piano pieces.
In order to correctly interpret this selection of twelve "songs without words", the German lyrics as well as English translations have been added to the music score. Obvious errors, which can be traced back to inadequacies in the old editions available to Reger, could be eliminated due to the availability of the critical edition of the original songs.
