Alan Stout draws on the fragment's melodic contours and harmonic language to craft an opening and closing that honor Wagner's voice with authenticity and integrity. Wagner conceived the theme as possible material for a planned Romeo and Juliet opera or as funeral music for the fallen of the Franco-Prussian War. First premiered in 1984 by the Pitzen Brass Ensemble, the resulting work carries a sense of historical gravity, mournful dignity, and deep expressive power. Includes extensive program notes.
