Price returned to a number of pieces that she had written earlier in her career – sometimes to change earlier titles or provide lacking ones, sometimes to record dates of composition or make small changes, and sometimes to rework the music and make it consistent with her musical imagination as it had come to exist in the early 1950s. The present composition – published here for the first time – belongs to the third class. Price had first composed it on October 30, 1937. But by the early 1950s, in the last years of her life, she was in a different place as a composer. As a result, what began as an apparently routine revision became an extensive rethinking of a work that had been conceived some fifteen years earlier.
