Looking at the documents preceding the final versions of the concert overtures sheds light both on Mendelssohn's working methods and on the various aesthetic motifs that prompted him to develop the new genre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the present volume of the Leipzig Mendelssohn Edition, the surviving early versions of the overtures are presented with the surviving sketches and drafts.
