At times, they swell at regular and accelerating rates: when an itch is this bad, you can feel your own pulse in the bite, and the stress of enduring it plus fighting the need to scratch can send your heartrate through the roof. of course, the itch must mercifully subside eventually, and all that's left are the last couple pinpricks before fizzling out entirely. Hydra: each head with its own distinct personality, growing out of different necks and sharing different relationships with various head-siblings in what must be the most complicated family dynamic ever. I can only imagine each of them wondering how some of their siblings\/niblings grew in closer proximity than others, how some heads turned out the way they did, and how they can reconcile their different relationships to their shared, multi-generational body.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the first chapter of the book, McWhorter offers five different ways in which a language can transform into many others: erosion and truncation of sounds, transformations to grammar, loss of an idiom's expressiveness, rebracketing of sounds, and broadening\/narrowing semantic meaning of words and phrases over time. While certainly these do not occur in their own vacuums in a practical linguistic sense, the templates to transformation of sounds could certainly be applied to musical ideas as well. During the moment in between hearing the term from a friend and learning what it meant, I was taken to this mental snapshot of some guy sitting out in a field casting a fishing line up into the sky, and looking beyond the scene in front of him for his catch. This image is the starting and ending point of the piece, which is a landscape whose scale dwarfs our world, looking both at the idyllic scene that this guy is actively taking part in as well as what this guy must see beyond the limits of our sky. Each poem in the set a series of puns on the title, and thus less a narrative of Finch ideas, but more a series of images inspired by the colorful diction he used.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e5 Views Re\/Dux was originally written for the Fontainebleau Ecole d'Art Americaines in 2016 for soprano, cello and piano, but has since been orchestrated for soprano and chamber orchestra. in the setting, I sought to emphasize these collections of images that Catherine procured in sonic form, adding additional dimension to the text. Since wordplay is one of my favorite forms of expression, it was a text I could relate to easily.
