Living in light-filled New York City, I find that my reaction and appreciation of \"dark spaces\" is intensified when I am other places, particularly non-urban spaces. in addition to this heightened perception of light and dark, I am deeply appreciative of the \"silence\" that accompanies darkness. Within Darkness reflects, in a sense, what sounds \"within silence.\" in the same way that a shadow in a Vermeer painting reveals its complexity when one moves in closer to it, darkness and silence reveal worlds of light and sound when one steps within them. I feel that sensitivity to light and sound is a profound awareness which is becoming more and more elusive in our modern society. Perspectives are expanded and senses go wild. This splinters the trio causing conflict and confusion. in an allegorical fashion, the story portrays the tension of uncontrolled expression within a community, as well as the healing power of compassion and love. The vocal writing incorporates aspects of motet, extended techniques, and bel canto, combining with instruments from different musical contexts (concert\/early music\/found sound) … resulting in a sound world that is familiar yet otherworldly and \"time-less\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am also exploring the idea of language as a remnant of civilization. What of our culture resonates through our language - now and in the future? What aspects of human nature are reflected in - beyond - our words? The texts (which I have created\/compiled) are a mix of languages, sounds, \"nonsense\", and music - in layers of fragmented meaning. The sounds and the words are a gateway to underlying contexts\/intent. From a musical standpoint, this word setting is reminiscent of Medieval motets (which use multiple texts to convey layered meanings); operatic aria (which expresses heightened emotions with minimal text); and \"grammelot\" (the language of the Commedia dell'Arte). The music has been created in collaboration with my adventurous and magical vocal cohorts - Lucy Shelton and Mary Bonhag; and instrumentalists from the Folger and 21st c. A common cross spider (araneus diadematus), named Arabella, is mythically portrayed by Swenson. Her shape poem, \"Overboard\" (a play of gravity) serves as a prelude.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Cosmosis, \"Overboard\" plays with musical equivalents of gravitational force following the shapes laid out in the poem, before entering the gravitation-free sea of space. Here, Arabella succeeds in her quest on \"The First Night\". A musical interlude follows, reflecting on the vastness of space as well as the heroic undertaking. in \"The Second Night\", Arabella succeeds again...but is sacrificed in the process... \"experiment frittered\". Their connection to and reverence for nature and the human experience resonate through the translations (which are themselves beautiful works of English). My musical settings do not incorporate the original songs or dances with which they were conceived. These warrior twins were sent to the world by the deities to rid the world of monsters who were born of the quarreling people of the earth, and who were ravaging the land. The words\/images of \"The Exchange\" and my previous musical setting of it became the materials with which I would explore the poem on a symphonic scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTranslucence is one continuous movement, but there are two parts. The first part is an abstract exploration of certain images from the poem - a journey through which to pass before arriving at the second part, which is based on the song itself. Some images are prominent...a murmur that builds into a complex mix of voices (\"Populous and mixed is mind\"), multiple string parts with superimposed wind and brass layers, released into a kind of plea (\"Earth, take thought\"). This leads to a rhythmic section-\"I will be time\"- which is an earthly dance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough the song is greatly expanded - exploded is perhaps a better term - and reinterpreted, I wanted to retain its essence, its lyricism and my direct reaction to the powerful poem. The meaning of the word \"translucence\" - a passing of light - is expressed in different layers. Poetry is the light that inspired the music. After fleeing Troy, Aeneas lands on her shores where he and his fellow survivors find refuge. with Cupid's manipulation, Dido and Aeneas fall in love. Recalled to his divine mission to found the city of Rome, Aeneas abandons Dido, and as she watches his ships sail off, she builds an escarpment and immolates herself. Later, in a pilgrimage to the underworld, Aeneas discovers Dido and attempts to talk to her – Dido refuses to speak.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat would Dido say? As she watched his ships depart?
