The title immediately brought to mind the anthem by William Byrd, with which I then chose to begin this new piece, divesting the work of its religious nature by omitting parts of the text.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI decided, inspired by the nature of the commission, to collect some texts that specifically describe singing communally and what benefits this holds for the individual and for society as a whole. A passage from Thomas Morley's Plaine and Easy Introduction to Practical Music describes the narrator's discomfort at being unable to join his fellow guests in some convivial communal singing. This then leads into words from a research paper published in the journal Royal Society Open Science by Eiluned Pearce, Jacques Launay and Robin Dunbar that details some scientifically observed benefits of communal singing. This paper was brought to my attention when I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of the book Why We Sing by Julia Hollander, published by Allen Unwin. Julia's book is full of science on this topic, interwoven with wonderful anecdotal evidence from Julia's own life and practice; she kindly permitted me to quote a few sentences from her uplifting book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, I asked choir members themselves from Saffron Walden to answer general questions about why they personally chose to sing and why they became members of this society. Some of these responses are woven into the text.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA final request of the commissioners was that there be an element in which the audience could participate. On the return of the initial Byrd point, the piece turns into a simple round with an extra part for any further members of the audience who wish to be included. It made a great impression on me and I was especially struck by a beautiful double choir 'Lord's Prayer' by Rachmaninoff from his \u003cem\u003eLiturgy of St John Chrysostom\u003c\/em\u003e. I wondered what it might be like to create something in its image that would be suitable for use in Anglican Choral Evensong. I was extremely fortunate in being asked to perform at the event as well as to contribute some music. in the week leading up to Coronation Day, I was staying in the Westminster area, close to the Abbey, and was able to soak up the extraordinary, almost unreal atmosphere. It was in marked contrast to the air of dignified solemnity that had accompanied the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II the previous year; the Coronation was to be a celebration on a grand scale and spirits were high.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKing Charles took a personal, close interest in the music for the whole occasion and commentators noted the breadth and diversity of his choice. The Ascension Gospel Choir made a memorable contribution to the service and certainly added to the joy of the occasion. This sense of joy was present in the noise and brilliance of the amalgamated musicians that day, also in the pealing of the Abbey bells. On the one hand, the day was a showcase for pageantry, precision, and expertise; on the other it was one huge party.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA month to the day after the coronation, I was invited to a concert, to be attended by King Charles, at which the four Handel \u003cem\u003eCoronation Anthems\u003c\/em\u003e were performed. I was seated close enough to observe the King listening to this music and I couldn't help but wonder how the biblical texts, immortalized by Handel's genius centuries ago, would strike the present King. Might he also, as he listened again to \"Zadok the Priest,\" have been taken back to the moment of his anointment in Westminster Abbey one month previously? When the motet by Josquin des Pres (c. 1450 – 1521) first appeared in print around 1519, he set the bar high for all composers (and there were several) who followed in his wake. His five-part polyphonic decoration of the 'Inviolata, integra et casta es Maria' plainsong is in three sections and includes a double, canonic cantus firmus running throughout at the fifth. This demonstration of technical expertise feels effortless in Josquin's hands. Vicente Lusitano (c. 1520 – 1561), a Portuguese composer possibly of African descent, took up the challenge and more; he decided to retain the double canon but add extra voices to create his an eight-part texture. Lusitano's neglected place in history has garnered a lot of interest recently and Rory McCleery with the Marion Consort have been powerful advocates for his music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRory invited me to compose my own response to Lusitano's \u003cem\u003eInviolata\u003c\/em\u003e setting. I would be adding a third layer on top of Josquin's original, as seen through Lusitano's eyes and then my own. While I did consider constructing my own eight-part polyphonic texture in kind, I acknowledge that I am no Josquin! Besides which, the harmonic rules that governed Josquin and Lusitano barely apply in my century which makes the exercise largely redundant. This is something I explore a little by adding my own musica ficta (modern-day accidentals) to Part One of Lusitano's original, before my 21st century harmony takes the music in a different direction. Instead, thanks to a suggestion from my older brother (who happens to be an expert practitioner of Medieval and early Renaissance polyphony), I thought to go back a stage further even than Josquin's setting and consider the plainsong itself. This was the original melody and text that inspired the whole chain of compositions and I wondered whether it could be my basis for an exploration of plainsong, homophony, organum and polyphony, a sort of mini-history lesson in music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdded to this commission was the circumstances of its premiere as a recording. It was devised for a project in which each individual consort voice was recorded separately in order to be played from an individual speaker. The resulting sound installation was arranged in an otherwise empty room, giving an audience member complete freedom to roam and experience the voices individually at point-blank range or together as part of the full consort. This gave me an opportunity to play with sound and space, having singers at times whisper text into one's ear, as though hearing scraps in the darkness of an abbey cloister. Mixing English with Latin also allowed me to explore the passionate emotion of this Marian text and the extraordinary position Mary holds within the Catholic faith. My desire was to write music in a jazz style that might be suitable for everyday use, to bring the sense of joy and excitement into Anglican worship that Duke Ellington's concerts suggested to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, those services were written for choir and jazz piano trio and proved too complicated to incorporate into a general church setting.
