The composer Robert Schumann edited a periodical in which he hailed contemporaries as geniuses or critiqued their work as misguided, and among his more memorable articles was a notice that Johannes Brahms – twenty years old at the time – would be the Messiah of composition. (Brahms would take decades to write a symphony, having internalized this sort of advance praise as a burden.) Quinn Mason (b. 1996) knows all about this early-career buzz, which has surrounded him for years. in 2020, Texas Monthly speculated that he could be "classical music's next superstar," and Mason has so far given the world little reason to doubt it. The Dallas native reveals three key things about himself in the interview in question: first, he holds Igor Stravinsky's ballet score The Rite of Spring in especially high regard; second, he has written reams of music with no particular plan for performance, and many pieces still await their debuts; and third, he loves working with dancers. These things all factor into his String Quartet No. 2 , on offer tonight.

Mason wrote this Quartet in 2013, a century after the first performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. While Mason's work lacks the confrontational attitude of the Rite, it clearly springs from a shared enchantment with the power of rhythm and repetition to lure listeners into states of expectation – the better to surprise them. Stravinsky, depicting routine violence in a pre-modern village, needed great flinty walls of orchestral sound; Mason, writing for no outlet in particular, allows his four string players to float. The American composer Aaron Copland, to whom journalists often compare Mason, wrote ballet music with a similar combination of wide-eyed enthusiasm and inobtrusive complexity. Enter Katie Cooper, the choreographer behind the Dallas-Fort Worth area's Avant Chamber Ballet, who approached Mason for a dance score only to learn that he had suitable material tucked away already. The result of their conversations: the 2019 version of this Quartet, which marries the abstraction of chamber music with danceability, even in the slow third movement. You may want to get up and groove to a string quartet for the first time; Mason, who also produces electronic dance beats, would surely smile to see it.

Composer: Quinn Mason (1996-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Violin, Chamber Ensemble

Work: Concerto for Violin and Small Ensemble

Binding:

Pages: None

Description

INSTRUMENTATION

flute, clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), trombone, tuba, multipercussion (china cymbal, concert bass drum, hi-hat, kick drum, splash cymbal, tam-tam, tambourine, toms, triangle), violin solo, cello, double bass

PREMIERE

Original version premiere: March 21, 2018 at TCU by violinist Kirill Raskolenko and the composer conducting

Revised version premiere: February 26, 2021 by Christine Wu, violin; MSM Camerata Nova; Kyle Ritenauer, conductor

PROGRAM NOTE

Anxiety resides in the life of every college student for various reasons. The third, 'Renewal,' picks the energy back up, but a little more spirited and zestful this time, and keeps it going to the very end, complete with dynamic and vibrant interplay between all the orchestral sections.

Quinn Mason has dedicated this work to "Will White, a friend and mentor for many years now, and one of the most joyous people I know!"

_— Jeff Eldridge (Principal Bassoon, Harmonia Orchestra)

Composer: Quinn Mason (1996-)

Instrumentation (this edition): Piano Reduction, Trombone

Originally for: Orchestra, Trombone

Work: Trombone Concerto ("Sonorous")

Binding:

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Commissioned by the Utah Symphony for Mark Davidson, principal trombone

**PREMIERE (ORCHESTRAL VERSION)
**

February 15-17, 2024; Mark Davidson, trombone; Utah Symphony; Conner Gray Covington conducting

PROGRAM NOTE

In 2020, Mark Davidson, the principal trombone of the Utah Symphony, commissioned me to compose my brass fanfare Changes/Transitions to commemorate the protests of the summer of that year. Because it was so early in the pandemic, in person performances were suspended so Mr. Davidson took on the Herculean task of going to each brass player and percussionist individually to record their parts then enlisting an audio engineer to edit it all together. The video, a fantastic result even 4 years later, is still online available to view.

From there, a fruitful collaboration with the Utah Symphony started. Maestro Thierry Fischer ended up conducting the orchestra in the first live performances of the piece during the 2020-2021 season. Former associate conductor Conner Gray Covington and I have a mutual friend in common who introduced Conner to my music. Mr. Covington subsequently performed two pieces of mine with the orchestra – A Joyous Trilogy and Toast of the Town Overture. Last summer, the orchestra toured my Toast of the Town again, this time under current associate conductor Ben Manis. and this season, everything comes full circle with the Trombone Concerto ‘Sonorous' written for the very person who started my association with this fantastic orchestra – Mark Davidson.

When Mr. Davidson and I began talking about this piece nearly 3 years ago (over BBQ in Texas), the first thing he mentioned was that he desired a new piece of music in which the trombone's singing quality was emphasized. The more expressive side of the trombone is something I've always been interested in and explored before; in my composition A Joyous Trilogy, composed in 2019, the second movement is a slow ballad-like showpiece featuring a trombone solo, who stands up from their seat to play it. Inspired by this, and his suggestion of the nickname ‘Sonorous', I set off to work.

The concerto is set in three movements. The first, Rhapsodic, is primarily focused on this singing quality that Mr. Davidson requested. in it, a pastoral theme is introduced by the trombone which is played in dialogue with the orchestra. The middle theme is slower and more of flowing, sustained and expressive. Throughout this movement one will hear the orchestra and trombone in conversation, sometimes lively and spirted, other times serious or innocent.

The second movement, Mysterious, is intended to show off the mystical side of the trombone's tone. As a result, I employ the use of mutes to alter the trombone's sound. in this middle of this movement, the solo trombone and 3 trombones in orchestra perform a 4 voice chorale to signify Mr. Davidson's never ending connection with his colleagues.

The finale, Awaken, finally gives us the virtuoso fire. Mr. Davidson is an artisan of the trombone and can literally do anything, so in this movement, the super cool technical side of the instrument's capabilities is shown. A technique featured throughout this movement is double tonguing, in which the trombonist plays multiple fast notes in a row. in this sense, the trombonist is not really a trombone in this movement but more like a heavy metal guitarist.

— Quinn Mason

Composer: Quinn Mason (1996-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Orchestra

Work: She Dreams of Flying (2023)

Binding:

Size: 11.0 x 16.9 inches

Pages: None

Description

She Dreams of Flying is my tribute to the inspirational and amazing women in my life, many of whom have played a significant part in my musical and personal development, and is dedicated to the phenomenal Maestra Carolyn Kuan, with whom I had a very successful and fruitful musical partnership for a season at the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

The composition begins with an offstage trumpet motif over a soft string pad — a theme that persists in being heard by showing up throughout the piece in different forms, usually more prominent each time. The piece was born out of an unusually introspective time in my life, one where I was reflecting on my life and career so far in a not so positive way. It also so happens that a member of my high school band had passed away very suddenly around this time; he was a tubist and it struck me in particular because he was younger than me with his life ahead of him, but just like that….he was gone. Thus the subtitle, ‘Darkplace'. I knew I wanted to write a piece of music that encapsulated these feelings perfectly and I wanted to use an unusual instrument to convey these thoughts. Compositionally, I've never written for the tuba in a solo context like this, so here was a chance to explore the different colors and capabilities of this expressive instrument. Thus, I was really pleased when I received this commission from Evan Zegiel, a good friend of mine and an enthusiastic champion of my music since we were both met at the Brevard Music Center in 2018. This sonata is dedicated to Evan with the utmost respect and admiration.

Composer: Quinn Mason (1996-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: String Quartet No. 7 (2023)

Binding:

Size: 9.1 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

My String Quartet No. 7 is a study of texture and harmony in one movement. 1958 composed his Symphony No. 3 ‘because he felt like it', I wrote this piece simply because a symphony is what I wanted to write. When this piece was generously commissioned by the Big Twelve Band Directors Association in early 2024, I didn't hesitate for a minute before deciding that my contribution would be my sixth symphony. There is no program note or deep meaning to this composition. It is simply meant to be an exploration of the many timbral and textural possibilities for the fantastic and always fascinating wind ensemble medium (a medium I don't work in often). The work is set in three movements, the second of which is an elegy in the memory of the distinguished American composer Ron Nelson, who passed away around the time I began work on this piece. This music came from the heart and I hope it speaks to the heart, somehow.

— Quinn Mason

Masonian It is another tribute to the great American composer David Maslanka (1943-2017) and a mentor of mine who really changed my outlook on composition when I worked with him closely in February 2017. Maslanka was a very spiritual person, and that often reflected itself in his music through his use of chorales and American folk tunes. in this piece, I chose to quote his Symphony No. 4, which was the piece that really defined spirituality in music for me, and my piece as a whole is a meditation on the influence of this great composer had not only on me, but on multiple generations of composers.

— Quinn Mason

Composer: Quinn Mason (1996-)

Instrumentation: Clarinet

Work: 3 Pieces for Solo Clarinet (2020)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

These three pieces were composed especially for Danny Goldman, a friend and clarinetist in the Dallas Opera Orchestra.
