One work, Gina Genova's for Solo Flute, was recovered during the creation of the anthology. Two works are relatively well-known; attendees or followers of the National Flute Association will recognize Marilyn Bliss's Murali from NFA competitions, and fans of Nina Assimakopoulos will recognize Margaret Fairly-Kennedy's Spirit Man from the performances that bloomed after Assimakopoulos's 2015 album Vayu was released.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom the perspective of a western classical flutist, all nine works are attractive and share a general attention to motivic development. None are strictly atonal, though several works (Bliss's Encounter, Ann Silsbee's Three Chants) develop more through structure than through natural or synthetic diatonicism. Sarah Meneely-Kyder's Air and Water drift melodically; the first improvisationally, the second song-like. Murali is the name of Krishna's flute. in Hindu cosmology and tales, such as those set forth in Robert Calasso's book Ka, Krishna plays his flute at the first full moon of autumn. It is a very alluring, seductive melody, and it calls to the female cowherds (the gopis), who are all in love with Krishna. At the sound of Krishna's flute, they come out of their dwellings and dance, surrounding Krishna. The dancing becomes more and more fevered, when suddenly Krishna disappears before their eyes. Soon they once more hear the murali, from a location just beyond the horizon. Is he calling them, or taunting them? But if it was at sunset, it could be a theatrical experience. I loved riding in the back seat on a late afternoon when there was a variety of clouds to filter the sun's glare and paint the sky with colors. I was especially fascinated by the seemingly impossible blend of blue and pink, and when my mother asked me what my favorite color was, I told her \"sky blue pink.\" of course it was impossible to find anything in that color! But for my birthday, she bought me a doll that had a dress that was exactly that! So this piece is dedicated to my mother, who appreciated nuance and could move mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eSky Blue Pink\u003c\/em\u003e\nis a lyrical piece, following a sunset drama that includes some dark threatening clouds but eventually resolves into a clear night sky with the first stars of the night.
