At the time, I was writing jazz tunes with the aid of a kitchen timer, and this was completed in sketch form in about 20 minutes. I then fashioned a lead sheet and began playing the piece in concerts, usually as an encore. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition in 2008. As I performed the piece, my interpretations became more consistent - even though there is a free improvisatory introduction and improvisation after the melody and before the recapitulation (both of them written out here in abbreviated form). I have had many requests from non-improvising pianists for a piano arrangement, so I created this arrangement in 2010.

This piece is to be played in a relaxed, leisurely manner with great affection and warmth."

Composers: Lukas Foss (1922-2009), Ralf Gothoni (1946-), William Bolcom (1938-), Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Fred Hersch (1955-), David Del Tredici (1937-), Curtis Curtis-Smith (1941-2014), Jennifer Higdon (1962-), Mischa Sarche Zupko (1971-), Stanley Walden (1932-), Derek Bermel (1967-), Bright Sheng (1955-), Fred Lerdahl (1943-)

Instrumentation: Piano

Binding:

ISMN: 9790300754673

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

These 12 diverse new variations on the orignal Bach aria were commissioned by the Irving S. The left hand of the piano is very rhythmic throughout, embracing the percussive, syncopated character of the tango. The right hand sometimes supports the rhythm, sometimes the harmony, and sometimes the melody, and there is a section without the string instrument where the pianist shines. syllabus, together with 3 pieces suitable for the own-choice section of the Performance Exam. The anthology supports students preparing for either the Practical Exam or the Performance Exam. Those preparing for the Performance Exams are aided by Performance Notes by Norman Beedie (Lecturer in Classical Improvisation, Piano and Conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), which give advice on technique and interpretation for each piece, and guidance on preparing an effective programme. The pieces in this volume are drawn from the extensive range of piano music in the Edition Peters catalogue — one of the widest available. The own-choice pieces provide a valuable selection of fascinating repertoire suitable for the Performance Exam.

Works:

Allegro from No. 1 in C Major from Kuhlau: 3 Sonatinas, Op. 20

C.P.E. 'The Last Call Waltz' is a darkly comic evocation of the last, slightly desperate moments of an inebriated patron's evening at a downtown saloon. and 'The Bowery Rag' is in classic ragtime form.' violinist Sharan Leventhal for the Gramercy Trio in 2004, this is a single-movement work whose title is an uncomplicated description of what to expect: the mood is reflected right from the beginning with the direction 'Warm and flowing'. Very melodic, with lush harmonies and a jazzy texture. in 9/8 time, the left hand of the piano has running eighth notes (broken chord style with some reaching-over stepwise motion, reminiscent of Chopin). The pianist must be able to handle chords with 10ths in the left hand and 9ths in the right, and the violinist has a brief high-note section.
