This is an essential part of the physical calculations required for a successful shuttle launch.

The introduction is epic, representing the firing of the main engines. The faster section that follows this captures the intensity and speed of the shuttle racing the through the atmosphere. The next, quieter section aims to represent the release of the initial engines, and the shuttle's entry into low-Earth orbit. The next louder section is the secondary boosters firing, which is followed later by another quiet section that turns inward to the astronauts' thoughts as they witness open space in front of their eyes. The epic conclusion of the piece returns to the introductory music, indicating a successful escape from the Earth's gravity.

Part 1 - Horn (F), Tenor Trombone, Euphonium (BC or TC)

Part 2 - Horn (F), Tenor Trombone, Euphonium (BC or TC), Tuba

Part 3 - Horn (F), Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium (BC or TC), Tuba

Composer: Evan Zegiel (1994-)

Format: Score & Brass Parts

Instrumentation: Trumpet, Tuba, Electronics

Work: Tapestry (2024)

Binding:

Pages: 42

Description

Tapestry, Evan Zegiel (2024)

for tuba, trumpet and heavy metal band (fixed media)

During my travels across the United States, Canada, and Japan in 2024, I was inspired by something I perceived in nearly every city I visited. I truly witnessed every end of the spectrum in terms of wealth disparities, access to clean water and nutritious food, housing availability, and so on. in every city, though, one could feel that will to live, that most instinctual of impulses inherent in all living beings.

We are all humans, sharing this planet with each other and with the many other species which call it home. The same could be said of a "clenched fist" approach: one can find examples of this pressure actually helping people. for an example, the overreach of an oppressive regime can lead to a political revolution, which ultimately benefits a greater number of people. On the flip side, such a revolution can result in even worse conditions. Examples of both can be found throughout recorded history.

The point is that every action has a consequence and not every outcome can be predicted. While out on the road playing bass, I knew I was going to have to miss my former mentor Phil Sinder's retirement celebration at Michigan State University in April. When he asked me to write a piece for the concert, I was honored to be granted a place in the events. This piece is, more broadly, a reflection on the many ways in which we develop and maintain bonds within our studios. Every applied instrumental and voice teacher represents a thread which becomes present in every student's life starting from their very first lesson on campus. We students carry the influence and the traditions of our teachers, passing them down while simultaneously uniting through them. Studying music is a very particular experience in that regard, because one can immediately connect with another who studied with the same teacher. These repetitious moments of convergence upon each other's lives is made relatable and personal because of that shared piece of identity and experience.

It is quite amazing to think that the simple act of creating organized sound brings so many people together.
