He had been musical director in New York since autumn 1892 and spent the summer in Spillville (Iowa) where a group of Czech immigrants had settled, thus making him feel at home. The beautiful natural surroundings led him to write this unconventional string quartet in the tradition of Beethoven's "Pastoral" - even down to the imitation of birdcalls. The work was finally premiered by orchestral musicians from the National Theatre, but a printed edition was not published until the middle of the 20th century.

This edition replaces the older H7625.

Composer: Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Format: Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: String Quartet No. 11 in C Major, B. 121, Op. 61

Binding:

ISMN: 9790006570690

Size: 9.3 x 12.2 inches

Pages: None

Urtext / Critical Edition

Description

Dvořák wrote his eleventh string quartet in 1881 during a shortage of time while composing the opera Dimitrij. He had begun this string quartet in New York, but continued with it only after his return to Bohemia in December, 1895. There is no trace of the influence of Indian or African-American music in this final chamber work; rather, the piece is striking for the amount of cantabile themes and motives, and their contrasting and artistic treatment. It seems that his relief at seeing his children and family again directly influenced the work. This clearly had an inspiring impact on him because in the space of just four weeks he composed a new string quartet in G Major. Together with the Quartet in A-flat Major, Op. 105, it forms a glorious close to his chamber music oeuvre. The String Quartet in A major from March 1862 is followed by a trio of works set in B-flat major, D major and E minor, written sometime around 1869-71. When Dvořák returned to his older works in later times, his manuscript list placed these quartets among the works he had destroyed. Mayhap he did so with the sketches or scores. However, Dvořák's handwritten copies of the parts survived apparently thanks to the director of the Prague Conservatory Antonín Bennewitz, first violinist of the well-known string quartet. Dvořák might have given him the pieces for a performance that, as far as we know, did not take place. Dvořák, who was at the time still a violist at the Provisional Theatre, was greatly enthused by the compositional methods of Wagner, and these inspirations are reflected in the String Quartet in E Minor.

Composer: Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Editor: Peter Jost

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: String Quartet No. 11 in C Major, B. 121, Op. 61

Binding:

ISMN: 9790201813998

Size: 9.3 x 12.2 inches

Pages: 80

Urtext / Critical Edition

Description

Composed in autumn of 1881, Op. 61 is the last of Dvořák's "middle" quartets by chronology for which Beethoven and Schubert served as the most significant models. Beethoven's influence, from thematic development to motivic treatment, is particularly noticeable in this work in C Major. It is only in the finale that the typical Slavic tonal quality usually found in Dvořák's music surfaces somewhat more prominently. Due to a lack of time, the composer - contrary to his usual practice - turned to older, either discarded or hitherto unpublished themes from other works for three of the four movements. Instead, the tenor clef is used.

Composer: Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Editor: Hartmut Schick

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: String Quartet No. 11 in C Major, B. 121, Op. 61

Binding: Folder

ISMN: 9790260109445

Size: 9.6 x 12.2 inches

Pages: 63

Urtext / Critical Edition

Description

Replaces H 1789 and H 1791

Dvořák composed his ambitious String Quartet in C Major, Op. 61 in the autumn of 1881. It was commissioned by Joseph Hellmesberger Sr., the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic and first violinist of the Hellmesberger Quartet who however dismissed it as a "weak work" and never played it in public. Rather, the premiere took place a year later in Berlin with the Joachim Quartet.

Dvořák, on the other hand, considered his Quartet, Op. 61 to be "the greatest and also most accomplished" of his existing chamber music works. The filigree texture of the work as well as the echoes of Schubert's Quintet in C Major and Brahms's Sextet in G Major show that he was decidedly trying to shed the cliché of a naïve writer of Slavic melodies and place himself in the Viennese tradition.

Simrock's first edition of the score served as the editor's main source. The autograph score as well as the first editions of the parts and Dvořák's four-hand piano arrangement were also evaluated. The edition contains a facsimile of twelve discarded measures of the Violin Sonata, Op. 57, which Dvořák used and developed further in the second movement of the quartet.

Composer: Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Format: Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: String Quartet No. 12 in F Major ("American"), B. 179, Op. 96

Binding:

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None
