It was written in the same year as Lee's Dance Suite for small orchestra, which was modeled after suites by Bach and Handel and formed the subject of her dissertation.

The Sonata packs a great deal into the four minutes of its single movement, and holds to aspects of the traditional sonata form-exposition, development, and recapitulation. An opening theme wanders between playful and quietly Romantic, climaxing before returning to the opening dynamic. A second, driving theme, with repeated notes and triplet flourishes, begins in the piano and migrates to the flute, then develops. The final third of the piece returns to the opening material, transformed by the second theme's ideas; after the final climax of the work, it ends in a quiet, contemplative restatement of the opening theme.

Lee's particular underlying harmonic progressions and back-and-forth chromatic movements in the Sonata are found throughout her works, and are based on bepop harmonic forms. She frequently uses fourths and fifths as passing tones in her melodies in addition to octave displacements of otherwise neighboring tones; both techniques are particularly common to composers of the mid-twentieth- century United States.

C. Edwards, and his work in uplifting African-Americans through education. His 1918 memoir, Twenty-Five Years in the Black Belt, held imagery that Ms. Lee returned to throughout her life. The first piece in this suite, "Ray of Light," was likely inspired by the third chapter of Edwards' memoir, and shares its title. Other works in Ms. Lee's catalog can also be traced to this chapter of Edwards' memoir; for example, her children's operetta Summer Sun, Winter Wind contains a musical realization of the parable of the ants and the grasshoppers. The complete third chapter from Twenty-Five Years in the Black Belt is thus included at the end of this book, alongside the biography of Ms. Lee by her daughter, Monica Moorehead. The second piece in this suite, "Study in Fifths," is a concert study on Ms. Lee's use of shifting patterns of fifths found throughout her works. The third piece in this suite, "Cam's Cradle," was written for her son, Dr. Cameron Moorehead.

C. German clavichord players adopted the form from them and developed it. The general rule was that it should consist of at least four pieces — allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue.

It was the French who expanded the suite by introducing all possible dances. Marchand and Couperin, especially, were responsible for including the gavotte, minuet, passapied, a Breton dance (which was similar to the minuet) and bouree. The French also used rondeau, rigaudon, polonaise and even independent movements in no particular dance form.

Bach uses all French models but preserves moderation where they run to extremes. He follows tradition in placing dances that were not originally a part of the suite between the sarabande and the gigue so that the latter comes as a conclusion. He generally places the non-dance movements at the beginning. Handel is much more moderate in his use of extra movements. However, there appear more of the variation-type movements in the Handel suites.

After examining suites by Handel and Bach, the following dances were chosen — mainly for their varied rhythms and their characters as social dance music — to comprise a modern suite written in baroque style and sometimes form.

Rondeau
Musette
Louré
Minuets I and II
Gigue

Bach's French and English Suites were the greatest source of inspiration to the composer, therefore it is only fitting that the Majority of references be made to these works."

C.
