White we all feel the strain oj the current pandemic-related forced isolation, the crisis also prompts us ta refocus on essentials. My own need ta reconnect with Nature was stronger than ever and I realized with even greater intensity that our relationship with Nature was invaluable. As I started working on this piece, I was deeply concerned with the impact of climate change. The horn is - symbolically - associated with magical powers. The piano evokes the sound of water, the music of Debussy ... I had the feeling that protecting nature from human-induced destruction could do with a little magic twist. Combining the two instruments gave me an opportunity ta explore new sounds that would enable me ta express my fears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Earth shall weep ... Two images haunted me throughout the compositional process, respective\/y inspiring the two sections of the piece: raindrops and Earth 's tears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the beginning, fragile sonorities create a mysterious atmosphere. Intense clusters in the low register generate an eerie soundscape in-sharp contrast with subtle, luminous harmonies that represent hope. Little by little, the piano unfolds a flowing motif The horn plays the seminal motif of the piece in a husky, veiled manner. The fluid sonority of the piano gradually fills up the soundscape but fast horn passages constant\/y interrupt its mellow chords. Now a regular downpour, rain progressive\/y becomes more acid. Bath instruments play in the lower register, resulting in a gentle purring sound, as if Earth was trying ta warn us. As raindrops fall after an unsteady rhythmic pattern, the previous fluid motifs gradually become more incisive. At last, rain abates, revealing an empty and desolate landscape. The horn sings a melancholy reminder of the opening motif The piano plays Just a few notes like sa many raindrops (or tears?) then reverts ta its initial sound texture. Suspending time one last time white Earth awaits a glimmer of hope.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a certain sadness that pervades the piece and creates a particular atmosphere emphasized by the use of various specific playing modes. Singing notes in the horn 's low register sound like the throbbing heart of our suffering planet Earth whereas half-stopped notes or the not quite peifect pitch of the natural harmonie series recall Natures precious impeifections. Muffled tones in the high register characterize the timbra! texture of the prepared piano. The medium and lower registers are also frequently used throughout the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs an individual, one often feels powerless against the destruction of sa many life forms on our planet, yet 1 firmly believe that we, artists, musicians, singers, writers, have a collective responsibility ta convey this message and raise awareness. Strokes of white paint, like an opposite force, contrast with the smooth, rnidnight blue background of the canvases. From one painting to the next, this energy evolves into fluid or rough nocturnal ripples, light sparkles, vaporous clouds or even crackles. The paintings seem to be filled with a weightless material, and that is why I irnagined a floating music seeking a balance between movement and irnmobility. for me, the idea of vitality, strength, and light that inhabits the infinite and distant void of the sky emerges from this bicolour series.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI recreated this white energy through asperities (grains of material or frail touches of light) that disrupt these layers of vibrant, mysterious blue with long, extended values. My work was to imagine variations of these two material-colours thanks to the extraordinary palette of textures the string instruments provide. The piece is thus conceived as a colourful and hypnotic joumey in seven tableaux, each corresponding to a painting of Verdiers series.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHors champ is a cold, nocturnal episode in which faint glimmers of light barely manage to pierce the darkness of the night. Ominous glissandi emerge from the violas and cellos in stereo, introducing the motif that will permeate the entire work. The double bass ernits an irregular and mysterious pulse in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA gentle, then majestic ripple rises in Ascendance. When the violins join in, it permeates the dark material, spreading its bright and lurninous beams.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTurbulence is where disturbances take place. Here the white energy made up of lively, chaotic particles is constantly disturbed and invades the space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn Synchronie I the cellos share the founding motif of the work in a single, pure and suspended breath. Tuen, they unite to form a single voice, with a violin melody joining them. The latter heralds the light during this brief lull.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMémoires du vent picks up the beginning of the work with the irregular throbbing of the double bass and the disturbing glissandi of the low strings. But these memories are also an echo of Turbulences which is transformed here into a Vortex in which the white, chaotic energy becomes a real whirlwind of liquid light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo close the piece, Synchronie Il resumes Synchronie I with the colder and more mysterious colour of the violas, still in stereo. They occur in the upper atmosphere and are invisible from the Earth (we can only observe flashes of lightning). To set to music my representation of them, I imagined orchestral colors specific to each one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Yellow-Orange Spheres are discs of light radiating in space in concentric circles. Arising from an electromagnetic impact in the ionosphere, they change color during their propagation, going from yellow to red-orange. I have represented this transformation by spherical chords traveling from one instrumental section to another. After the impact of the keyboards (harp, celesta, vibraphone), they are first played by the winds before extending to the front of the orchestra through the solo string quartet. Moving in the orchestra, they seem to hover above a celestial and motionless layer of strings. Thus, this slow movement introduces seven spherical chords that mark out the notes of the seminal motif of the piece. in this layer of the atmosphere farthest from us, the light is shimmering but fragile. Unstable, it flickers and soon a rumbling density appears, introducing the second movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom a thunderous aggregate are born the Red Sylphs, lower in the mesosphere. They are liquid and incandescent filaments flowing towards the Earth and resolving into intense red, luminous swirls. Played by the high-pitched woodwinds, these threads never vanish despite the explosions anticipating the storm (kettledrums, bass drum, low-pitched winds). Brass and strings alternatively present the chord-spheres. The elements come together as they ignite into a lyrical song based on the motif submerging the work. The flamboyant sky still glows a little before subsiding and returning to the slow and cold texture of the beginning of the work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe last movement opens with a windy episode. Dark and mysterious with the orchestra's low-pitched colors, it provides the transition to the stratosphere. It is in this layer of the atmosphere closest to us that the Blue Jets fly at a hallucinating speed. These real light strokes, both brief and fast, are played by the woodwinds tinged with the brilliance of the keyboards. in the middle of this very lively movement, a suspended and cosmic moment appears, a brief lull before the storm. The horn takes up the motif of the spherical chords whose resonance permeates the woodwinds and then the muted strings. The material swells, radiates and one last time introduces the notes of this motif in a shattered chorale taken on by the brass instruments. Then, with a certain urgency, the dazzling blue jets resume their frantic race. As they approach the Earth, the sound becomes increasingly abrupt and dry.
