Description

A second colorful orchestral fantasy after Henry David Thoreau (following 'In Wildness is the Preservation of the World' of 1975), commissioned by the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and the NEA.

Program note from the composer:

Thoreau Fantasy No. 2 relates more to the spirit of Thoreau's words rather than being a programmatic transformation of them; however, in the course of the work certain parallels can be drawn. The opening Misterioso ("Daybreak") is followed by the principal thematic argument, presented within a textural "haze". This is followed by commentaries highlighting first the strings, then the woodwinds, then the brass. An extended transition ("Pastorale") leads to a series of playful scherzo sections alternating with energetic canonic passages, which form the climax of the work. "Echo" canons and a transition lead to the reprise ( Misterioso ) and a peaceful close.
