These mask-like figures were part of the very modernity from which they suffered, and their dancing with anonymous partners expressed the existential angst of modern man.

Besides the tango itself, the concerto also features the two other genres of Argentine tango: a vals in the second movement and a milonga in the third, which, with a stamping, intensifying tempo, finally reveals its origins in the candombe. The introduction to the second movement quotes Carlos Gardel's "Mi Buenos Aires Querido," and the vals theme in the middle section of the movement paraphrases the melody of his tango song "Tomo y obligo."
