Some represent fragments left as such for biographical reasons, for instance, because their creators turned to new projects, or died while at work on them. Others simply constitute notated ideas that from the outset were not intended for further elaboration, or compositional studies. Others, however, represent rem- nants of works which were once completed, but have come down to us in incomplete form. Whether, in the first instance, it is appropriate to make performing versions of such fragments should be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis, bearing in mind all the facts as well as the surviving sources. Many dogmatists categorically condemn such completions even when they have never studied the original sources. Such polemics do no favour to the living experience of music.
