The work is divided into four main movements: Entrée en forme de danse, Intermède, Adieux à la fiancée, and Cortège, Bénédiction nuptial, Sortie de l'église; however, within some movements there are various subsections which are denoted by changes in tempo and musical character. Dedicated to Georges Bizet, who created a piano reduction of the score, this work is also known as the Second Suite for Orchestra, with the First Suite for Orchestra being composed a few years prior in 1865 the year he returned to Paris from Rome. Like many other composers, Massenet left Paris during the Commune, but he nevertheless continued to be productive, composing some songs, piano pieces, the Scènes hongroises, and working on the Scènes pittoresques. By the fall of 1871, Massenet was back in the capital to attend rehearsals of his Scènes hongroises which were performed by Pasdeloup on November 26 and then again on December 17 of that year.
