However, a closer examination of Liszt's concertante works for piano and orchestra reveals that this area of his extensive oeuvre remains comparatively under-researched to this day. Publications often contradict one another regarding the dates of composition of individual works; some completed compositions are mistakenly described as fragments, whilst other arrangements or sketches have been accorded a status almost equivalent to that of a complete work. Fortunately, this is not the case with the ‘Fantasy on themes from Beethoven's Ruins of Athens'. It is one of Liszt's clearly documented and complete concert works and occupies a special place within his oeuvre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLiszt was often accused by his contemporaries, as well as by later musicologists, of taking too many liberties with the original works in his numerous arrangements. in fact, he did not view the art of transcription as a mere transfer of a work to another instrument, but rather as a creative development. His arrangements were intended to preserve the spirit of the originals whilst at the same time enriching them with his own musical language. As early as 1834, the \"Grande fantaisie symphonique\" on themes from Hector Berlioz's \"Lélio\" was composed, a work that exemplifies how Liszt transformed other people's musical material into a highly virtuosic concert piece.
