Writing them served as a diary for me. As I completed each one I thought that the ‘grown up' thing to do would be to take an attitude of ‘project complete, move on' . But my attention kept returning to them – particularly when I had insomnia. in the wee hours the preludes continued to grow, as I repositioned the ideas in completely new sound palettes. ‘Round Trip Ticket – A Theme with Seven Variations' for pierrot + 2 percussionists (2007) was the first fruit of this effort. It uses Prelude No. 6 as a theme, arranged for marimba and wooden percussion instruments. My insomnia project is ongoing, with drafts in various states, like a workbench full of dolls in various stages of construction / deconstruction. Intermezzo No. 13 is mostly ‘just an arrangement' of Prelude No. 13 – no new phrases, no big deletions, no variations. But musical ideas that started life on a pitched percussion instrument – the piano – often have to change a lot when they land in a mixed ensemble of instruments that sustain. Tunes that had been a series of ‘plinks' can be transformed into expansive, fluid bands of sound, taking more time as they're shared across an ensemble. in other instances, the ensemble version requires a second line that would have cluttered the piano version. Complex rhythms that fit neatly on the piano require more time in an ensemble. Because there is more information conveyed in only slightly more time, Intermezzo No. 13 sounds faster than Prelude No. 13, even though they are marked at the same tempo.

Instrumentation: flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, percussion (vibraphone, bongos), viola, cello, double bass
