Central to the piece are two stainless steel bowls which have served hundreds of pounds of salad to our many guests over the years. They have an extraordinary command of their instruments, an astonishing ensemble, and a profound musical instinct. Their warmth and enthusiasm for music and life have enriched the lives of all who have come in contact with them. Perhaps their intense discourse with the music of the second Viennese school and its descendants influenced the piece's basic chordal vocabulary (mostly tritone/fourth-, and Major/Minor third-chords). At some point it came to me that these are the intervals of "Es ist genug" a Lutheran hymn tune written by Johann Rudolph Ahle in 1662. The melody is well-known, principally from Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale setting and from Alban Berg's quotation of that setting in his Violin Concerto. The tune is beguiling and unusual in its opening intervals and its phrase structure, which leave us floating in the key of the dominant far longer than the "central" key.

Upon further reflection, abstract intervals were out the window, and it was clear that I should use this tune as a basis for the piece. (A spinning figure skater pulling her arms in will speed up with no further effort.) Both of these meanings seem relevant. in this piece, or at least in the first two movements, I can imagine a spinning skater moving her arms in curious ways, spinning fast and slow, while remaining in one spot on the ice. in the first movement, "With Quiet Turbulence," the meter is defined by a simple melody in the flute, while the viola and cello background motive implies something else. The conflict results in a curious sense of both motion and stasis. The compulsive background motive eventually commandeers the entire movement, insisting upon its own meter, with several possible downbeats for the ear to choose from. "Uneasy Lullaby" gently rocks between 6/8 and 3/4, a simpler sort of ambiguity. "With Headlong Agitation" tosses all ambiguity to the wind with relentless forward motion.

"Moments of Inertia" was commissioned by Dinosaur Annex for its 26th season.

Composer: Tom Flaherty (1950-)

Instrumentation: Clarinet, Mezzo Soprano, Piano Quartet (Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello)

Work: Asylum Piece (1983)

Binding:

Work Language: English

ISMN: 9790600232789

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

Asylum Piece is a setting of a text by nineteenth century British poet John Clare, who spent a good deal of his life in an insane asylum.

As a child, he would spend hours writing rhymes on scraps of paper, usually hiding them from his father, a farm laborer who saw no purpose in his son's daydreaming.
