The work was premiered on July 3, 2011, in Oakland, California at the annual convention of the association. The association asked for this composition to be appropriately written for a talented high school pianist. I wanted to write pieces that had both technical and musical challenges, but that were very accessible and eminently playable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always loved the waltz, whether it be by Chopin, Brahms, Johann Strauss, George Gershwin, or Fats Waller. Waltzes often seem old-fashioned, but that is part of the fascination for me. in these three waltzes, I wanted to embrace that old-fashioned quality while trying to find something new in the form. I also wanted to write short pieces that were high in contrast. Subsequent to writing these three waltzes, I became interested enough in the genre to complete several more. I attempted to compose each one in a single day, striving for a simple, immediate, and visceral connection between music and text. The songs can be done as a cycle, individually, or excerpted in groups selected by the performer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sixteenth and last song in the collection, SAGA Love, was composed a couple of years later, in 2006, at the request of Stephen Oosting, who needed an encore song for piano four-hands for a concert he presented at Moscow Conservatory (thus the small quote from the \u003cem\u003eSabre Dance\u003c\/em\u003e. SAGA is a Brish organization of senior citizens quite equivalent to the AARP in the United States. The poem's author, Bee Rawlinson, graciously granted her permission for the use of this text. This song expresses a view of love definitely not touched upon by the other songs (!) and I'm delighted to be able to include it in this collection.'
