Mendelssohn began composing sacred music beginning with the precocious student works of the 1820s and culminating in the magisterial oratorio Elijah, premiered in 1846 and published in full score only weeks before his death. All together, Mendelssohn completed well over 50 sacred compositions, among them a cappella motets, cantatas, psalm settings, occasional liturgical pieces, and oratorios. Much of Mendelssohn's sacred music was first heard not in the church but in the concert hall, and in the large, popular music festivals he conducted in Germany and England during the 1830s and 1840s. Carus-Verlag has edited the complete sacred works of the composer, including 38 first editions, so that all of these works are available to musicians in critical editions. The Stuttgart Mendelssohn Editions include forewords in three languages which provide historical information and analysis of the works as well as critical comments. The special edition of the study scores of all Mendelssohn's sacred works for choir and orchestra which is being published for the commemorative year 2009 opens a door to the work of one of the most However, reports from his contemporaries prove that the composer was working on the oratorio until a few weeks before his death and that it remained fragmentary. The individual sketches, which are being prepared with a music-philological approach for the first time in this edition and published accordingly, can all be assigned to the pieces elaborated in the score, except for one (for a German Nunc dimittis). Thus, there are three fully composed movements for the first scene (focusing on the birth of Jesus) as well as the Passion scene with a choral and a chorale movement; all belonging to the first part (\"Earth\").\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe title \"Christus\" for the fragment, established by the posthumous first printing of 1852, is based solely on the title handed down by his brother Paul Mendelssohn-Mendelssohn via Ignaz Moscheles. As the autograph bears no title, Mendelssohn made no written comments on it, and the content of the underlying libretto is also unknown, we can only speculate whether the composer had already decided on a final title and, if so, what it was.
