The instrument is an unkeyed wood predecessor of the piccolo. Groundhog is a well-known Appalachian folk song.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ein this case, the original performance was on a small pygmy flute which was cut from a piece of cane. The player then burned four stop-holes at the lower ened, plugged that end with a rolled leaf then notched the top end, all in a few minutes. After playing a while, the performer seemed to lose all interest in the flute. The original can be heard on Music of the Ituri Forest , recorded by Colin M. Turnbull and Francis S. Chapman, Folkways LP No. FE4483.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe last melody is from Turkestan, Afghanistan. The foot-tapping accompaniment employed in my piece was originally played on the Zer-Barhali, a type of drum. Nana was transcribed from the Folkways Records LP, Children's Songs from Spain \/ Karen James \u0026amp; Isabelita Alonso, and Shto Mi e Milo is both a Macedonian and apparently, a Bulgarian folk melody. He and the tune appeared on a 1982 Kiwi-Pacific Records Ltd.\/Hibiscus Records LP called Music for Sale (Indonesian street music recorded by Jack Body). in the original, the singer accompanies himself on a small drum, and in my version, the piano part was generated solely by the notes in the melody and rhythms played by the drum. The original recordings were made between 1958 and 1995. The fourth is an African American folk song, and I transcribed it from a field recording found on a Smithsonian-Folkways album, although I can't remember which one (there are several versions). This was based on one of my works for solo guitar. The fifth is based on a melody written by Lorenzo di Liuto, a Renaissance Italian composer for lute. I also used this melody in my symphony. The sixth is a modern setting of a melody by early Renaissance composer Johannes Okheghem.
