The constraints of the tonal idioms of the past are compounded and magnified by the limitations of the wind instrument for which this suite is written. Music for an unaccompanied monophonic instrument must communicate, in a single line, the essential tonal elements of key, chord movement and modulation, as well any narrative elements such as conflict and resolution, action and rest. It is hoped that this is accomplished in each of the four numbers of this suite. These pieces should ideally be played together in the given order, however they may be performed separately or in subsets of any ordering. Each number marks a genuine attempt to conjure an ephemeral yet palpable sound sculpture in the mind of the listener.

The melodies in this piece were conceived across a period of about twelve years, spanning a period of great change in my personal and musical life. The final fruit of these ideas— Solo Suite in the Old Style —was composed for oboist Lillian Copeland, who premiered it in a New York Composers Circle concert on February 15, 2024. The piece is dedicated to my indomitable sister Veronica, in an attempt, however inadequate, to recognize and thank her for the hard work, devotion, and generosity of spirit that she so selflessly bestows on her family.

Composer: David Mecionis (1967-)

Format: Performance Score

Instrumentation: Cello, Violin

Work: 5 Mirror Canons (2021)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 11.8 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

In a two-voice mirror canon, either player's part may be held parallel to a mirror to reveal the part of the other player, with the middle line of the five-line staff functioning as the fulcrum. By contrast the cellist reads three clefs, bass, tenor and treble, for which the middle line is D, A and B, respectively. By the exploitation of these cello clefs throughout the canons, a pitch in one part may have any of three different pitches for its "reflection" in the other part. The first half of this section is in A-Minor with the violin temporarily preceding the cello by a single quarter note, until a quick modulation a tritone away to E™-Minor/D™¯-Minor heralds the cello's corresponding and temporary shift into the lead position.

Five Mirror Canons was composed between late-November 2020 and early-January 2021 for Dan Qiao and Carolyn Regula.

Composer: David Mecionis (1967-)

Instrumentation: Piano

Work: Fragmentary Scenes (2024)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600231713

Size: 8.9 x 11.8 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

Fragmentary Scenes for piano solo was composed in May 2024 for Craig Ketter. Straus. Z-relation is characterized by two sets of pitches—in this case pairs of hexachords, or six-pitch sets—where neither set of the pair can be inverted or transposed to produce the other set and yet they possess the exact same interval content. It is not that they are unrelated but that they are, as Straus argues in his seminal work Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory, "like first cousins" rather than siblings. I believe this commonality can be used to give the listener an impression not unlike what one gets from classical tonality, in which controlled similarites and differences contrive to bring attention to a chosen key center and a small number of related keys. All of this is admittedly—with apolgies to Dr. Straus—not very "post-tonal." But I found it too interesting and fun to resist exploring.

The six-bar fugue statement is comprised of four uneven sections freely derived from two pairs of z-related hexachords. Each hexachord is transposed such that the statement sounds more or less as if in the key of D. The second voice follows in the manner of a tonal answer, entering by the customary interval of a fifth from the statement but with the hexachords rearranged to alter certain melodic intervals such that the "key" is preserved. The sense of there being a dominant key of D throughout this piece is often traceable to the handling of the z-related sets.

Composer: David Mecionis (1967-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Bass Trombone, Trombone II, Trombone I

Work: Suite for 3 Trombones (2024)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600231737

Size: 8.9 x 11.8 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

Suite for Three Trombones(composed June 2024) is a suite of five short numbers for two tenor trombones and one bass.
