According to Habbad literature, the Nigun serves as a universal language; it ascends beyond words and conveys a deeper spiritual message than words can; a Nigun sung in Yiddish will reach and affect someone who only speaks Arabic and vice versa. The Nigun may be short but since it begins and ends on the same pitch it may be repeated over and over. in this sense, the Nigun has no beginning and no end and is eternal. Nigunim (the plural of Nigun) may be secular or religious, fast or slow, and may be sung and played in a variety of social events and circumstances.

When the 92 Street Y and Orli and Gil Shaham approached me to write a new piece for their Jewish Melodies program, my first thought was to write a piece that would explore the music of the ten lost tribes (the Hebrew tribes that were exiled after the first temple was destroyed). Since we know very little about the whereabouts of these tribes, I decided to explore the music of various Jewish traditions from different parts of the world and how they relate to larger local musical traditions.

To my surprise, after researching Jewish music from different parts of the world, I found that there are some common musical elements to North African Jewish cantillations, Central Asian Jewish wedding songs, Klezmer music, and Ashkenazy prayers. Though I did not use any existing Jewish melodies for Nigunim , the main modes and melodic gestures of the piece are drawn from these common elements. Moreover, different sections of the piece draw upon local non-Jewish musical traditions of each of these regions: for example, the second movement uses principles found in Georgian folk rhythms and harmonies, and the fourth is inspired by Macedonian dances.

— Avner Dorman

G. The Turkish word 'Karsilama' refers to a popular couple's folk dance in 9/8 meter. Originally, the word 'Karsilama' meant 'face-to-face greeting.' Avner Dorman thought it would be appropriate to write a couple's dance for two pianists, since a piano duo plays facing each other. The piece is structured as a set of variations. Each presents a different way to dance the 9/8 rhythm, as well as a different way two people might greet each other face-to-face. The Palestinian and Israeli piano-duo Duo Amal gave the premiere of Karsilama in Hamburg, Germany, in 2012, and performs the piece around the world.

G. I grew up admiring Zukerman's playing, hearing him at the Israel Philharmonic as often as I could. Hearing the two of them play together years later was completely enchanting. I wanted to write a piece the explored the relationship between the two soloists — not only their instruments. How do they interact with one another? What is the interplay between the soloists and the orchestra? How does a modern-day concerto reflect both a long musical tradition and our present time?

The piece is neoclassical in some aspects. It follows a general fast-slow-fast three-movement structure, and there are contrasting themes in each movement. Each movement develops these themes throughout the form. The soloists begin the piece almost wistfully, with a certain sense of nostalgia for older concertos. Against that longing for the past, the orchestra pushes for modern rhythms, harmonies, and orchestral colors.

In the first movement, the soloists oscillate between fighting against the orchestra and joining its exciting harmonies and rhythms. While the orchestra adopts some of the older materials that the soloists present, it ultimately engulfs them with its drive. At the outset of the second movement the soloists try again to return to the past. They play a sweet melody in octaves accompanied by a simple Alberti bass, and for a period of time this seems to work. Yet this time, it is the cello who strays away from the original theme. The soloists no longer appear as a unified group; their conflict leads to an intimate duet. At the conclusion of the movement the conflict subsides, and the soloists seem to find a new way to coexist, with the orchestra now in support of their reunification. The third movement is both energetic and expressive, and all voices seem to have found a way to cooperate and exist together. The two main themes no longer yearn for the past, now allowing a playful interplay between the soloists as a group with the orchestra. Each of the soloists gets the opportunity to shine individually, at times with interjecting allusions to the past (quotes and misquotes alike). By the conclusion, this nostalgia has passed, and in its place is an acknowledgement — a tribute, celebrating the relationships, the individuals, and the history of the concerto.

— Avner Dorman

G. Each movement is titled after one of the six mantras that he outlines at the end of the book. The movements are repetitive in a variety of forms — chaconne, theme and variations, passacaglia — reflecting the repeating nature of a traditional mantra. The first movement, "I am here for you," begins with a open, flowing gesture in the guitar that calls to mind a sense of presence that continues, as the gesture transforms throughout the movement. The second movement, "I know you are there, and I am happy," celebrates that happiness of being with the one you love. The third movement, "This is a happy moment," is an aria, a love song celebrating the joys present in everyday life. The final movement, "You are partly right," is the most conflict-driven of the piece, and therefore the most dramatic. As the author of the text explains, we can say "You are partly right," both in response to praise and admiration as well as in criticism or disagreement. The movement progresses through conflict to the recognition and reconciliation that we must embrace imperfection in order to love each other fully.

— Avner Dorman

G. I have always regarded the string quartet as one of the highest and most pure mediums. As I approached composing my first string quartet, I looked for an equivalent to its perfection and considered the great beauty and expression that a true friendship can embody. What came to my mind was a friendship that I shared with three other people. At the end of the year 2000, one of those friends passed away in a motorcycle accident. When Avi Avital approached me to write a concerto for him, my acquaintance with the mandolin was fairly limited. I had used it in chamber pieces only twice before, and did not know most of the repertoire for the instrument. As I got to know the instrument better, I discovered its diverse sonic and expressive possibilities.

The concerto's main conflicts are between sound and silence and between motion and stasis. One of the things that inspired me to deal with these opposites is the Mandolin's most basic technique – the tremolo, which is the rapid repetition of notes. The tremolo embodies both motion and stasis. The rapid movement provides momentum, while the pitches stay the same.

The concerto can be divided into three main sections that are played attacca:

A slow meditative movement with occasional dynamic outbursts. The tremolo is slowed down becoming a relentless repetition in the bass - like a heartbeat. The fast movement is constructed much like a Baroque Concerto and a Concerto Grosso. The Israeli poet Ronen Altman Kaydar shared several of his poems with me, and I selected these two contrasting yet parallel texts, originally written in Hebrew and translated into English. Both poems immediately immerse the reader in the poet's world, expressing intense emotions of fear and urgency.

The first song aims to convey the speaker's extreme emotions — seemingly at the limits of enduring fear associated with an old memory. Chromatic and repetitive patterns overtake the speaker's mind, and relentless motion plunges us into this intense experience from which there is no escape. The vocal line frequently alternates between very low and high tessituras, mirroring the dichotomous pairs in the text: right and wrong, profit and loss, crime and…. The leaps into falsetto also contribute to the sense of extreme anxiety. My interpretation is of a haunting experience during military service, where the speaker cannot escape the mocking characters around him, making him feel alone, small, and weak. As in the poem, a military march is expressed musically, conveying a sense of marching toward loss and inescapability. The phrase "shouting in rhythm" takes on particular significance, leading back to the moralistic dichotomy tormenting the speaker.

In the second poem, the speaker is not alone, but he and his partner are running away, hiding, breathing heavily. They vow to return home, to their "palace" — yet, similarly to the first poem, the encompassing darkness seems overwhelming, and it may be too late to go back. The main musical motif consists of rapid arpeggiations punctuated by intense pauses. There is a constant tonal ambiguity, simultaneously implying a home key and its contradiction. The intensity and motion of the piano part correspond to the poem's overall urgency to flee, while more static harmonic sections symbolize the pull to return home. The expressive vocal line juxtaposes small gestures with large leaps. Elements of fugue — from the Latin "flight" and the psychiatric term for impulsively traveling away from home — are incorporated, reflecting the loss of identity driving the journey away from familiarity.

— Avner Dorman

G. The piece is a lament for these victims of indifference, in the hope that their memories can help us improve as a society.

‘The cello is, perhaps, the most natural instrument for a lament,' he continues, ‘expressive, pensive, and lyrical. The accordion, its counterpart, marries the spiritual nature of an organ with the simplicity of a folk instrument – easily transported anywhere by a single musician. Structured as a set of variations, descending from the uppermost register of both instruments down to their lowest notes, the piece reflects on the memory of the victims, from the spiritual realm of the heavens down to their resting place in the earth.'

Dorman was a natural choice of composer for Segev as in 2012 she had commissioned a cello concerto from him that became a particular favorite. ‘After performing the concerto a few times,' she reflects, ‘I wondered what his cello writing would sound like in the more intimate setting of chamber music. The idea of using an accordion was his, and it reminds us of growing up in Israel, where many families get together for evenings of folksong, accompanied by the accordion.

G. The piece was first performed by Dmitry Shteinberg and the IDF chamber orchestra conducted by Menachem Nevenhoiz in 1995. in this early piece it is possible to identify some of the compositional trends of Dorman's later works, mainly the combination of Neo-Classicism with Rock elements; Middle-Eastern rhythms in the fast movements and transparent lyricism in the slow one; Humor and Joie de Vivre, on the one hand, and tormented moments on the other:

"My initial inspiration for the concerto came when I heard a recording of Bach's keyboard concerto in A Major on the radio (performed by piano and strings). I found the bright sound of the Violins doubling the Piano's top line very exciting, and then and there I improvised the opening tutti of my Concerto in A. This was the first time I wrote a Neo-Classical piece. I found the challenge of doing something new while keeping the transparency and directness of the classical style very appealing. I got even more ecstatic about the piece when I realized that using the traditional harmonic vocabulary enables me to effortlessly integrate Jazz, Pop, and Rock elements into the piece. Even though the piece is dedicated to Vivaldi, one can also find in it allusions to Nina Simone, The Police, The Cure, Stravinsky, and of course, to Bach. Throughout the piece the soloist borrows patterns that are idiomatic to the string instruments of the orchestra."

The piece is in three movements: fast-slow-fast. The first and third movements use the tutti-solo convention of the Baroque era. The second is a song without words.

G.
