The work explores the nonsensical often-humorous character of the \"Cartilla Fonética\" by emphasizing the inherent wordplay in the way that syllables, words and short phrases are organized in the book. The piece focuses mostly on the purely aural features of the language as well as the possibilities of creating new meanings through the rearranging of syllables and words in the text. Inspired by the indistinct and fragmented recollections of my own childhood, specifically from the time when I was learning how to read and write, the work also intends to access a distant place and explore the translation process of a personal experience into a massive reflection\/expression of the original scenario. Inspired by the transformative energy of the inriri, Idreamed up a new myth in which women have always existed, and once they had lived a plentiful life theywould turn into inriri birds that would reconnect with their loved ones left behind through songs they wouldmake by carving in the trees. As a young girl I loved playing with this plant, marveling at the magical e\"ect of a gentle touch. I would brush my fingertips against every leaf I could, watching them transform over and over again before my eyes. As an adult, I find myself just as fascinated by the di\"erent translations of the word moriviví: shameful, fragile, humble, lazy, and resilient. Each conveys a very di\"erent narrative, all with a deep connection to the Puerto Rican experience. Historically, these adjectives have been weaponized and used to describe Puerto Ricans, becoming an entire vocabulary of oppression. Yet every one of these words contains multitudes of complexity, awakening countless feelings, entirely dependent on context. I'm interested in the contradictions inherent within these layered definitions and how, in the absence of spoken language, I might translate these intricacies into sound. The physical and emotional weight of caring for family and home transcends the passage of time and endures beyond loss; it ultimately becomes inextricable from the conception of self and, almost paradoxically, a source of solace. The piece centers Lido Pimienta's voice, both powerful and tender, as it sonically renders Hernández' vivid personification of the house as matriarch. Braided around this vocal pillar are colorful orchestrations incorporating ethereal, crystalline electronics. The song unfolds as Lido's voice, through vitally expansive melodies, breathes life into each verse, exchanging expressive lyrical runs and shimmering soundscapes with the orchestra. Recurring flourishes incorporate disjointed slivers of Caribbean music. Gestures, inspired by the natural soundscapes of Puerto Rico, sound-paint the landscape upon which the house stands. The piece combines field recordings from the waves in Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo, and birds from La Jungla Beach in Guánica, both located in Puerto Rico, along with undulating gestures in the strings reminiscent of the sound of waves. I wanted to capture the feeling of joy and calmness I feel when I'm in Puerto Rico in these beautiful places while also expressing the complexity of the diaspora experience for those who like me cannot be physically present in those places and close to their friends and family most of the time. When Kronos approached me in March 2020 to write a piece for them to rehearse and perform together during this difficult moment of social isolation, I wanted to create something playful and rhythmic yet flexible and malleable that would be fun to put together. Something that responded directly to the challenges during this time of performing music together while not being able to be together in the same room. But also, something that took into consideration the limitations of the video communications platforms and use those challenges as compositional material and creative impulse. The natural delay, the canceling of sound frequencies and the inability for everyone to fully play together at the same time and in perfect synchronization, are all challenges that I decided to embrace as unique elements that make this piece thrive even within the limitations of the medium. \"Marejada\" is an invitation to sonically escape from your room and to actively imagine and immerse yourself in a different place and time. Performance Notes This piece is intended to be performed over Zoom video communications platform but could also be performed through any medium the performers feel most comfortable with. The piece is purposefully written to not be performed with a click track but rather by listening and responding to each other during the performance.
