A young talent is seen as exceptional and hard-working. for this person, amazing opportunities can present themselves and the potential for growth seems boundless. At times though, being dedicated to a talent can be difficult, as choices between work or spending time with family, friends, or engaging in \"normal\" youthful activities often have to be made. Over time it becomes understood that making these choices is a part of the process, and although challenging at times, they contribute to the achievement of success.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn composing Gifts, I was greatly influenced by the story of my friend, flutist Jasmine Choi. I once had a conversation with her where she spoke about leaving her hometown at 12 years old to focus on music, and then she left her country for the United States at age 16. for a 12 year-old to choose to leave home in pursuit of their craft, is truly extraordinary. Jasmine exhibited bravery and dedication at such a young age, and now she is one of the most celebrated flutists in the history of the instrument, bringing joy to thousands across the globe. Hers is a story that is truly moving and inspiring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening of Gifts is embellished material from a Korean child folk song, \"Pongdang, Pongdang,\" symbolizing youth and time with family and friends. This is followed by a faster and quieter section with harmonics, representing an inner voice serving as a reminder of work to be done. Because of this, there is not much time for loved ones, even though that time is greatly desired and missed. Next there is a groovy section, where confidence builds due to all of the invested work. The first movement represents her stolen youth and the lamentation of saying goodbye to childhood. She is reflective of playtime, family memories and former dreams. While she is remembering pleasantries, she is also recognizing they are things of the past. The second movement explores the anxiety and sense of urgency felt about being forced into womanhood. She is full of complex feelings ranging from fear, unpreparedness, resentment and sadness. She also knows she has to bravely and quickly become an adult and sooner than later, a young mother. The third movement is her reluctant acceptance of and submission to an undesired life. She has assumed her new role, but is deeply yearning for the childhood she barely had and to have ownership of herself. She expressed to me how even though her professional life consisted primarily of classical bassoon playing, she wanted to incorporate more singing into her work, and explore music outside of the traditional classical umbrella. As I got to know Gina, we talked a lot about the demands of being a professional instrumentalist, especially in the freelance scene of New York City, and also the challenges of managing that with motherhood, and life's many other responsibilities. It was written for Flutronix and The Batteries, a trumpet duo with Gareth Flowers and Joshua Frank, for a concert series Flutronix self-produced in NYC appropriately called, \"Flutronix and Friends.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the spirit of friendship, this is a playful piece about two close pairs and how they complement one another in sound, rhythm, and spirit. The flute is busy working through the noise, but is often interrupted and has to frequently stop, start and repeat itself, similar to when one is trying to communicate or complete a task while there's disruptive noise. This was met by riots led by white mobs, and policy was enacted to overthrow the participation of Blacks in politics. Later during Jim Crow, Blacks were segregated from whites, receiving poorer quality services and resources, and were disenfranchised as voting citizens. Among many oppressive acts and violence leading up to the Civil Rights Movement, Black Americans experienced redlining, making it next to impossible to legitimately purchase a home and build wealth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose are just a few incidences indicative of a pattern that's as American as apple pie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe beginning of \u003cem\u003eThe Pattern\u003c\/em\u003e is inspired by the final battles of the Civil War. Once the war ends, Black Americans are declared free from slavery, but left with no guidance or resources. Though during Reconstruction many Blacks were able to acquire land and build their own communities, there was lingering disdain from defeated confederates, which was followed by terroristic behaviors towards Blacks. The music moves into a section that represents the hope and optimism felt by Black Americans, but also the looming and inevitable attack from white supremacy.
