Description

While the solo bassoon works of the Czech composer Ludvík Milde (1849–1913) have long since secured their place in that instrument's repertoire, his other compositions remain little known. Among Milde's unpublished chamber music in the library of the Prague Conservatory, where he taught from 1886 to 1894, is his opus 23 Sextet for the unique combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and two bassoons. A colorful and richly textured two-movement work, the Sextet is Milde's sole extant composition for more than two mixed winds and thus offers new insights into a composer previously believed to have focused almost exclusively on pedagogical solo music. The edition is based primarily on the composer's undated autograph score, with readings from the manuscript performance parts selectively incorporated where they clarify the score's ambiguities.
