I had been invited by my friend and fellow composer, John Sharpley, an American expat living in Singapore, to premier his Viola Sonata with him at a recital of all of his own music in Victoria Hall.

...Krishna is often portrayed playing flute, so that was obvious, and I actually attended Krishna's Birthday at that temple in Singapore during my visit! John and his partner, Raj, met my flight at the Singapore airport with a huge bouquet of orchids before taking me to my hotel. Next day when we began rehearsing, I noticed they had sprays of them all through his home, and that they grew everywhere "wild" in Singapore. Their elegance and color seemed to go hand in hand with the [alto flute]'s rich golden tone, and the sprays of orchids (not single stalks like you find in grocery stores in the United States) with their twisting branches, gave me the contours of the theme for this Orchids movement.
