Dvořák's Violin Sonata is regarded as the chamber counterpart to his Violin Concerto in A minor, as its understated, more intimate and private complement. The composer wrote it during a period separating two versions of his concerto, in the spring of 1880, and he first performed the work for a private audience in Berlin with Josef Joachim. It was published by Simrock that same year.
