Jane introduced me to Byrd's arrangement of Dowland's wonderful \"Pavana Lachrymae\" ('Pavan of tears') — a piece of many layers but simple and elegant beauty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have taken the first page and run, in some places, quite wild with it. The opening theme stays much the same but I have colored in the harmony more intensely. The first variation \"Turn Again\", focuses on the notated trills and turns in the original theme. Next, Byrd flies to India and I put his original theme into North Indian Bhairavi and Purvi modes — this move was inspired by Jane Chapman's award-winning \u003cem\u003eThe Oriental Miscellany\u003c\/em\u003e album with transcriptions of Indian vocal music for harpsichord.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rollercoaster ride that is \"Recklessly\" (still in India) continues in those modes, taking all the sixteeth note and thirty-second note runs (in retrograde) from Byrd's original and accompanying them with a melody in the Kaida tabla rhythm. The next variation, \"William in Love\", is a complete contrast — the original melody is given a very romantic treatment, drifting dreamily through many key changes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePassing notes takes the eighth note passing notes in Byrd's arrangement and gives them a lilting life of their own with quirky touches such as Byrd's original ornamentation transforming into bird song.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, in Maestoso, the original theme with even richer harmony and grand fanfare-style rhythms. I've been waiting all this time for an opportunity to set them and Oxford Lieder Festivals 2023 theme of the Visual Arts provided the perfect context, especially as I could see and hear so much colour when reading them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJessica has cleverly created a highly evocative narrative. This song cycles story is about preserving something thats otherwise gone forever, which paintings, poetry and music can all achieve. Our heroine, touring an art gallery, leaves the official itinerary to explore a long-ago relationship through four paintings she encounters, imagining that she is stepping into a different time and place. Raindrop Prelude evokes the awakening of love, which soon proves dangerous (Playing with Fire); one or both of them ran away (Tarantella), but even now she treasures a transfigured, idealized image (Neptune). The idea for this piece came in a conversation with my Afghan friend, Gulwali Passarlay, in which he was expressing the hope that people would continue to think about Afghanistan and to remember, violent political upheaval aside, what an incredibly rich, beautiful and ancient culture this country has.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart of this wonderful culture are the centuries-old, mythical tales, often with a moral message, that have been passed down through many generations. I was intrigued to find the French-sounding name, Isabelle de Charrire (1740 1805). Also known as Belle van Zuylen, she was born and brought up in Utrecht, where the premiere of this new composition would take place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the 18th century, it was common for well-to-do families to appoint French tutors for their children and, as a result, everything Belle wrote was in that language. Her writings cover all aspects of life and love, but I was particularly drawn to these two poems.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCompanion, for which I have taken three verses from her longer poem Heureux moineaux, tells of her envy at how much easier sparrows' relationships with each other are than those between humans. The poem was Belle's reaction to hearing of the philandering Marquis de Lassay, inspiring her to express that it is good to flee from love and to prefer a less jealous, less worrisome friendship. The violin sets the scene, imitating authentic sparrow calls from Californian, Argentinian and Spanish sparrows and the choir enters, taking the sparrows' rhythms and harmonizing the pitch progressions. Here, the English words feature alongside the original French as a bird-like accompaniment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eConquest, or Quels accents vien-je d'entendre is a beautifully structured and intensely passionate poem, written as a song for Mademoiselle de Tuyll de Serooskerken, elder daughter of Lord of Zuylen. It was originally set to the air: Vous amants, que j'intresse possibly a pre-existing tune or one composed by Belle herself. I have relished creating overtly romantic harmonies with restless textures in English accompanying the yearning melody in French. Alexander Pope (1688-1744) is regarded as one of the UK's finest, and with the money he had made from his translation of Homer, he was able to purchase a magnificent villa in Twickenham's Cross Deep, of which his famous grotto still survives, underneath St Catherine's and Radnor House Schools. He was 22 when he penned his epic Ode for Musick, on St Cecilia's Day although it wasn't published for another 13 years. When George Herbert was also requested, it was incredible serendipity that he had actually written a poem of that title: \u003cem\u003eThe Pearl\u003c\/em\u003e. Matthew 13:45. This was inspired by the very short parable which compares the immense value of the Kingdom of Heaven to the most exquisite pearl a merchant could sell: a merchant seeking goodly pearls, on finding one of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Herbert expands all that he had to include things of worldly worth such as learning, honor, and pleasure, but concludes that there is an immeasurably greater and more priceless gift: the costly love of Christ which is the Kingdom of Heaven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI worried that a poem claiming knowledge of some quite grown-up things might not be suitable for the girls, but their luminescent ageless sound and their incredibly mature attitude in rehearsal dispelled that fear. When she played to me, its warmth and huskiness seemed so spookily like a human voice that I decided an a cappella double choir setting of words would best complement it. We found a choir – the Nonsuch Singers – brave enough to enter into this project and Kiku found me the wild and wonderful poems of Ikkyu Soyun, a 15th Century Zen master whose timeless words cover the entire gamut of human emotion and are beautifully translated by John Stevenson. The poems are often very short, so each movement is a compilation of two or three of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCrazy Cloud was a name that Ikkyu gave himself when in 1428 he finished his Zen training and went his own \"wild way\". The movement starts with a boisterous \"Noh Theatre\"-style acclamation of his nickname in Japanese and the music is \"Blown about madly\" by shakuhachi and voices alike.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor 2. Love Song, I have used a beautiful and poignant Japanese lullaby called \"Edo Komoriuta\" (meaning \"Lullaby from Edo\", the old name for Tokyo) as a backdrop to two of Ikkyu's highly romantic and sensual poems. The lullaby is sung in Japanese and the words depict the loss of a little boy's beloved nursemaid who has gone back to her home. This chimes with how Ikkyu feels at the loss of his true love to another man.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAutumn Night brings together three of the many poems that Ikkyu wrote which mention this season. During my research into Japanese traditional music I was introduced to mnemonics – a form of aural transmission of music through the natural pitch patterns of various vowel and consonant sounds. These \"words\" don't actually mean anything but if you try saying the percussion line, Tsu ta pon tsu-ta tsu po-po-pon etc., you will see how the sounds automatically come out as a rough pitch and rhythmic pattern. These are mnemonics taken from a Kabuki dance called \"Goro Tokimune\". The process is reversed as in the middle verse when the shakuhachi provides the melody whilst the choir recites the words.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are many people without whom this piece would not exist. I have set the poem as I would have done for a singer and the words appear above the trumpet part so that they can be emoted exactly as they occur. again by Merton College Choir, so soon after my anthem Nocturn for them -- however, having already set the Canticles twice, I panicked a little about whether I could do something completely different with the same words. So, I sent a survey to the choir members, whom I had met on several happy occasions, as I knew that they would come up with some great ideas. and they did! I have tried to incorporate as many of their requests (in bold below) as I could and am so grateful for the musical ideas they inspired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with a request for story-telling, the Magnificat ('oscillating between uncertainty and excitement'), in D-flat Major, begins hesitantly with a sense of unease, as the Virgin Mary grapples with the momentous news that she is to bear God's son. The mood swings between scared and excited through melisma and expression in rich and crunchy harmonies (trying to incorporate the latter without sounding too louche for this reverential moment), soprano suspensions with altos and swaying gently in 12\/8.The mood becomes more assertive at 'He hath showed strength...' and then ecstatic for the 'Glory be...'.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Nunc Dimittis in G-flat Major, begins in a more 'tranquil' reflective mood as Simeon welcomes a peaceful end now he has seen the salvation of the infant Jesus's arrival into the world. These two people are represented by frequent duets between sopranos and basses, with Simeon's bass frequently coming out over the choir. It doesn't stay that way for long, though, as it becomes something you can really sing your heart out with a good build up from quiet to loud, more melisma and ornamentation enhancing the emotional atmosphere. Having been in 4\/4, we return to an 'even more ecstatic' 12\/8 'Glory be' from the Magnificat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI'm hoping that I have also fulfilled a request for the bewitching and sublime -- but only you and these wonderful performers can tell! Each heaven has its own unique mood and atmosphere, with metaphorical imagery, and is be portrayed in a short movement, where one of the players will be featured as a soloist, with the other six accompanying them. Throughout the piece I have used Arab maqams (or scales) to place the work's sound world at the source of Islam.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eParadise of Adan ('residence' and 'eternal place') Repentant and discordant harmonies after punishment for sins introduce this movement. The tuba takes the solo role, accompanied by a river of rushing and swirling maqam, flowing below beautiful gardens where every wish is granted. The music mellows as acceptance from God is granted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eParadise of Firdaus ('Garden') This is the most prestigious and superior level with every kind of plant: fruit, trees and especially grapevines - so the noble bass trombone solo is accompanied by entwining gentle maqams and little fanfares.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eParadise of Naeem ('blissful paradise' or 'delight') Warm, comforting and tranquil harmonies accompany the 2nd trombone as this heaven rewards its inhabitants with a prosperous and peaceful life, abundant in happiness and numerous blessings. The river of the first movement reappears, more serenely, towards the end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eParadise of Mawa ('a place to take refuge; dwelling, home, to descend home') The first trombone starts its solo on its own, depicting the Lote tree which abides here. The music for the tree is rising up, growing and healing. The other players accompany by rattling pencils in their instruments' bells and blowing gently through their instruments to make a sound like the tree's leaves rustling in the wind. Angels accompany the soul 'descending home'.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHouse of Qurub ('near\/close in proximity to God') The music becomes intimate and reverential. The second trumpet's ardent solo is accompanied by hymn-like harmonies, the instruments closer in pitch to each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eParadise of Al-Aliyah ('high, elevated, superior, in location and rank'). The highest place in Paradise naturally features the piccolo trumpet as soloist, accompanied by ascending maqam scales and rising harmonies as we are under the throne of God and his incomprehensible greatness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHouse of Al-Salam ('home of peace and safety') We come 'home' to where the piece started, safe from visible and invisible harms, no grief or sorrow, death or illness threatens abode of well-being. Initially, the 1st trumpet plays their solo against a backdrop of the first movement's tuba theme, harmonised in all the other parts. Then the river returns and every instrument reminds us of a few bars of their theme. We end in jubilant splendour as God, with the light of guidance, illuminates our hearts. It was my wonderful friends - nuns at Stanbrook Abbey - who found these words and their beautiful translation by Carmen Acevedo Butcher. They are taken from the fourth letter of St Clare of Assisi to her very dear friend St Agnes of Prague, written shortly before the former's death in 1253.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI asked the girls for some ideas of what they love to sing - the answers included: 'happy, in two parts, big sings, high notes, upbeat, loud and interesting' and 'no plainsong'! All these wishes have been granted, as the piece exhorts the pure joy and exhilaration of God being the source of so many positive moods and qualities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEspecially important is God's 'Mirror' - having two recently teenaged girls of my own, I'm only too painfully aware of how harshly this age group can judge their own reflections, comparing them to the significantly filtered and cosmetically enhanced celebrities who stare back them, via social media.
