Stanford, one of the first British musicians to recognize Parry's talent, called him the greatest English composer since Purcell. Asked to write a new piece, Parry turned, at the suggestion of his colleague George Grove, to Milton's ode \"At a solemn musick\" which he had been considering setting for many years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReviewing the concert, The Times said of Blest Pair of Sirens: \u003cem\u003eThe choral writing is in eight parts and abounds in contrapuntal devices. At the same time the spirit and the accent of the words are carefully attended to, as befits a work in which \"sphere-born harmonious sisters, voice and verse\" are invoked to \"wed their divine sounds, and mix'd power employ\". One of these, BLEST PAIR OF SIRENS (AT A SOLEMN MUSIC), came about as the result of a commission by contemporary composer Charles Stanford for a concert celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Performed on May 17th, 1887 at St. James's Hall in London, Stanford conducting, it quickly achieved acclaim and has been performed at such events as the Last Night of the Proms and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
