While much music of great quality has been written for saxophone quartet, often that music can be quite challenging for young musicians. Additionally, much of the entry level music features transcriptions of baroque and classical period music. This project seeks to enrich that repertoire with new faces, diverse perspectives, and re-imaginations of what chamber music can be for developing musicians.

Works:

Flagello: Red Giant (2023)

Bradford: Supplication and Celebration

Baugher-Dunlap: Mountain Mornings (2022)

Todd: The Three Semi-Wise Men

Composer: Gala Flagello (1994-)

Instrumentation: Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon)

Work: Matriarch (2020)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790094008365

Size: 8.7 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 24

Description

Matriarch , Gala Flagello (2020) 7'30"

Matriarch , written for the 2020 Michigan Music Teachers Association Commissioned Composer Prize, was inspired by my two grandmothers, Dianne Flagello and Olive Herring, who were matriarchs in every sense of the word. From them, I learned how to lead, energize, forgive, empathize, persevere, and, most relevantly to this piece, evolve. Grandma and Nanny are true role models, and this made me wonder what parts of myself come from them. When I react to a difficult situation or celebrate an accomplishment, the way in which I do it is borne of the family who came before me. Matriarch _uses musical material based on my own name to demonstrate how we learn to move through the world through the lives of our ancestors. The Gala Flagello theme encounters many twists and turns as it adapts to changes in its environment (texture), headspace (range), personal circle (voicing), and age (duration). Each of the work's three movements connect a different instrumental sound world to the concepts of earth, air, and fire, depicting a blossoming of kindness and hope for the future of our planet. The first movement, "Flower Power," is inspired by the titular social movement of the 1960s–1970s and sonically critiques the juxtaposition of fragility and strength, beauty and utility, and nonviolence and force. "Flower Power" reflects the ethos of Marc Riboud's iconic photograph The Ultimate Confrontation: The Flower and the Bayonet and incorporates a musical Easter egg—a countermelody for counterculture. The second movement, "Star-Crossed," summons the hope, whimsy, and longing of its ill-fated protagonists through celestial textures and luminous scoring. The third and final movement, "Slow Burn," explores both versions of the titular literary trope—romantic and anger-fueled—through the arboraceous lens of controlled fire, an originally indigenous practice that mitigates the drought-driven effects of climate change. "Slow Burn" foregrounds bright and wooden sounds to pay homage to our forests and the necessity of ecological restoration.

Special thanks to Kim Fleming, Christi Blahnik, Rachel Zephir, Ashley Killam, Ancel "Fitz" Neeley, Michael Avitabile, Sagar Anupindi, Allison Chu, and Hannah Hickman for their guidance during the writing of this work. and Pete Williams: to the moon and back. I began to triangulate the ancient trees I read about at night, their real-life incarnations I saw during the day, and their arborous cousins—maple, spruce, rosewood, and grenadilla—comprising the instruments for which I was writing. What the Trees Know seeks to capture not only the visceral woodiness of this entire experience but also the coinciding lessons I learned from the novel, the Redwoods, and my GLFCAM mentors. The piece musically explores collaboration (as trees work together to find sunlight), community (as dead trees support a host of wildlife), communication (as fungal networks talk to one another), and care (as dying Douglas-firs return their nutrients to the soil).

Composer: Gala Flagello (1994-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Brass Quintet (Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Horn, Trombone, Tuba)

Work: Monochrome Metronome (2025)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 11.8 inches

Pages: 17

Description

Monochrome Metronome (2025) celebrates the vivid color and shifting texture unique to brass quintet. As the work progresses, the trio's devil-may-care attitude transforms as they unearth wistfulness and wonder in their supposedly fiendish environment. Devil's in the Details is a piece about intention, reflection, and connection, sonically illustrating that things may not always be what they seem.

Composer: Gala Flagello (1994-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Tuba

Work: Fibonacci (2025)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790094011778

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 19

Description

Fibonacci(2025) sonically explores the titular sequence and its foundational role in not only mathematics but the magnificent natural world around us. From the branching pattern of trees to the family tree of honeybees, the Fibonacci sequence appears in all facets of our environment, in addition to its use by humans in architecture, art, and design. Fibonacci asks what we hear as natural versus unnatural, organic versus inorganic, as we contemplate the pervasiveness of this sequence in our daily lives. Do we inherently perceive something that is mathematically constructed as stilted or artificial? Can patterns blossom organically and calculations arrive effortlessly? This work employs the first nine Fibonacci numbers intervallically, harmonically, rhythmically, and metrically, showcasing the rich tone and registral possibilities of the tuba as the performers journey through a systematically shifting world. This work was inspired by a sentence I found in my journal from June 2020: "I feel like I'm mourning the loss of a season that hasn't happened yet." I found that I no longer experienced the passage of time in the same way that I had pre-pandemic; everything moved so slowly and yet also so quickly around me. Societally, we think of Father Time as steady, rigid, ticking on reliably, while Mother Nature is supposedly caring, nurturing, and abundant. Although the gender binary is a myth, intentionally re-gendering time and nature helped me discover two figures whose cosmic work actually resonated with my new relationship to my surroundings. Mother Time is shifting, flexible, and gentle—an ever-changing season of learning and growth. Father Nature is relentless flowering, a continual force that progresses with or without humans out and about. Mother Time, Father Nature translates these personas to music, exploring proportions and development as the two might, but in the form of meter, rhythm, register, and phrasing.

Composer: Gala Flagello (1994-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Alto Saxophone

Work: Sweet Nothings (2023)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790094011082

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 34

Description

Duration 10'

Sweet Nothings (2022) was commissioned by Connor O'Toole and a consortium of 17 saxophonists and explores the idiom "sweet nothings" through both lyricism and virtuosity. The first recorded use of this phrase occurred in 1876 by poet Edwin Coller in his "Black Sir Ralph: An Essex Legend," published in Volume 28 of the London magazine Belgravia founded by novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Today, "sweet nothings" are defined as "words of affection exchanged by lovers," but the more I contemplated the phrase itself, the more I noticed its inherent oxymoronic nature: How can something be both kind and cursory, meaningful but fleeting?
