Description

Composed at the MacDowell Colony in January 1990 following the loss of a close friend, Migration explores the delicate balance between Eastern and Western musical traditions as they exchange ideas while striving to preserve their distinct cultural identities. Commissioned by the Andiamo Chamber Ensemble, the work represents a pivotal milestone in Brown's output, standing as her first composition to weave together Western and traditional Japanese instruments. Since its creation, this poignant exploration of cross-cultural dialogue has enjoyed widespread international acclaim, championed by renowned groups like Bang on a Can and the Lark Quartet, and is preserved on CRI's Emergency Music recording series.
