The performance in December, 1793, in Vienna of a "new trio for two oboes and cor anglais" by Johann Wendt stimulated Beethoven, who was in the audience, to write a trio for the same combination. Other similar trios were composed by Triebensee and Krommer, and three years later Beethoven himself wrote another trio for the combination – the Variations on "La ci darem la mano." The Trio, Op. 87, quickly became popular and many arrangements were made during Beethoven's lifetime.
