Composed in 1948, and revised in January 1953, this rare British work for double bass (or cello) has remained in manuscript until this publication. The style is modern but approachable and is a great addition to the solo repertoire, utilising much of the range of the solo double bass. The accompaniment is strongly individual, rhythmic. confident and direct. Rhapsody covers a four octave range from the darkly hued tones of the lowest notes, through the lyrical and melodic middle register, to high flute-like harmonics. The double bass and piano are treated as equal partners with a confident and strident compositional style contrasted by lyrical and sonorous episodes.
The edition includes solo parts for cello or double bass and piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.
