Written under the guidance of Fromental Halévy to prepare students for the preliminary stages of the Prix de Rome, the piece sets a text by Eugène Scribe originally featured in Daniel Auber's 1839 opera Le Lac des fées.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBizet made several alterations to the source material's lyrics, such as substituting \"Vive la femelle\" for \"Vive la jeunesse.\" He also rearranged the second verse, which was originally intended for a solo soprano, transforming it into a dialogue for tenor and bass soloists. The piece remained unperformed for over a century and a half before receiving its world premiere in July 2023.
