I am very much attracted by the boundary-crossing, "transcendental" (Liszt) aspect on which all important etudes are based: the idea that the pianist is prepared to push himself to or - past - his/her limits.

Etude No. 1, In C, was composed in 1999. It was influenced by the Balinese gamelan music that I became better acquainted with duringa sojourn on Bali in 1998, and that has played a role for me in many works. A number of concepts of gamelan music were decisive here: first, the rhythmic models (in particular the consistent overlapping of three different pulsations); second, the uniquely iridescent tonal world that comes about through the subtle tunings. (Strictly speaking, the latter cannot be realized on the piano, and yet it can be hinted at through the sonic structure of the piece and the pedal artistry of a skilled pianist.) In spite of theseallusions to gamelan music, In C is not a paraphrase or even an imitation of it. The harmony of the piece is based on the tone C yet the piece has nothing at all to do with the functional harmony: the overtone series of C merely forms the harmonic foundation ofthe piece.

Etudes nos. 2 through 4 (Sequences, Scherzo ad libitum, Scales) were conceived as a group and written in 1995. In comparison to the other etudes, they have a relatively strong orientation on the piano music of classical modernism, especially as far as piano technique is concerned. The titles Sequences and Scales tell something about the compositional and pianistic problems of the second and fourth etudes. Scherzo ad libitum, on the other hand, is a character piece and thus forms a striking contrast to the other etudes.

Toccata, the fifth etude, refers to Etude No. 1: it, too, is based on the overtone series of C. and yet the concept on which the Toccata is based is diametrically opposed to that of the first etude: In the place of inactivity, a very dynamic forward motion dominates here,

Works:

Piano Etude No. 1 in C Major (1999)

Piano Etude No. 2 (Sequenzen) (1995)

Piano Etude No. 3 (Scherzo ad libitum) (1995)

Piano Etude No. 4 (Scalen) (1995)

Piano Etude No. 5 (Toccata) (2003)

Piano Etude No. 6 (Grains) (2000)

Composer: Unsuk Chin (1961-)

Format: Study Score

Instrumentation: Chamber Ensemble

Work: Gougalon (Scenes from a Street Theatre)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060126185

Size: 8.2 x 11.8 inches

Pages: 148

Description

From the composer: The title derives from Old High German. Inherent in it are the following meanings: to hoodwink; to make ridiculous movements; to fool someone by means of feigned magic; to practice fortune-telling. The title refers to a Proustian moment I experienced – entirely unexpectedly – during my first sojourn in China: In 2008 and 2009 I visited Hong Kong and Guangzhou, among other places. The atmosphere of the old and poor residential neighbourhoods with their narrow, winding alleys, ambulatory food vendors, and market places – all this not far from supersized video screens, ultramodern buildings, and glittering shopping centers – brought to mind long forgotten childhood experiences. It reminded me very much of Seoul of the 1960s, of the period after the Korean War and before the radical modernization. of conditions that no longer exist in today's (South) Korea.

I was particularly reminded of a troupe of entertainers I saw a number of times as a child in a suburb of Seoul. These amateur musicians and actors travelled from village to village in order to foist self-made medicines – which were ineffective at best – on the people. To lure the villagers, they put on a play with singing, dancing, and various stunts. (I still recall that the plots almost always had to do with unrequited love, and that the performance inevitably ended with the heroine's suicide.) This was all extremely amateurish and kitschy, yet it aroused incredible emotions among the spectators: this is hardly surprising, considering that it was practically the only entertainment in an everyday life marked by poverty and repressive structures. Entertainment electronics and toys (not to mention art) were of course unknown. Therefore, the whole village was present at this "big event," a circumstance from which others also desired to profit: fortune-tellers, mountebanks, and travelling hawkers. Among these were also wig dealers from whom young girls could earn some money for their families by sacrificing their pigtails.

Gougalon does not refer directly to the dilettante and shabby music of that street theater. The memories described above merely provide a framework, just as the movement headings are not intended to be illustrative. Pantomime stems from a time in which humans did not yet speak, and ever since it has appeared in a great variety of forms. Asian traditions of mime tend to be extremely formalised and highly complex, but in Europe, the art of pantomime, which was often frowned upon by church and ruling bodies, maintained a strong undercurrent in the history of theatre since the Ancient Greeks. Chin remarks that, in cosmigimmicks, she was reluctant to map the history of the pantomime, and instead chose to concentrate on three scenes that are important for her: Shadow Play, which is related to shadow puppetry; Quad, inspired by Samuel Beckett's two homonymous TV plays (which are, in fact, "geometrical pantomimes"); and Thall, a homage to György Ligeti. This title is the Korean for "masque"; the overall character of Thall is both slightly sentimental and macabre, describing the psyche of a torn person. cosmigimmicks is in a Major addition to 21st-century ensemble repertoire, from one the leading composers of her generation.

Instrumentation: trumpet, percussion, mandoline, guitar, harp, prepared piano, violin. .

Composer: Unsuk Chin (1961-)

Instrumentation: Cello, Orchestra

Work: Cello Concerto

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060140129

Size: 9.1 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Composer: Unsuk Chin (1961-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Violin, Orchestra

Work: Violin Concerto No. 1 (2001)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060116636

Size: 8.2 x 11.8 inches

Pages: 164

Description

Composed in 2001 to commission from the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin, where Chin was composer-in-residence during the 2001/02 season. The premiere was given on 20 January 2002 in Berlin by Viviane Hagner and the DSO under its music director Kent Nagano. in 2004 the Violin Concerto won the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

Presented in four movements the composer demands extreme virtuosity from the soloist, yet the virtuosity is never an end in itself, instead always serving the development of the structure and colour. The orchestral instrumentation is traditional, but expanded by two harps and a large percussion section. The magically oscillating sound of Unsuk Chin’s orchestra results not only from the mastery of often unusual combinations of sound, but also from the potential of contrast in the intrinsically homogeneous groups. This is in a Major and established violin concerto for the 21st century.

Composer: Unsuk Chin (1961-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Percussion, Tape

Work: Allegro Ma Non Troppo (Version for Percussion & Tape)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060133688

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 28

Composer: Unsuk Chin (1961-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Soprano, Chamber Ensemble

Work: Akrostichon – Wortspiel (Acrostic Wordplay) (1991)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060103728

Pages: None

Description

Composer's note:"Akrostichon-Wortspiel consists of seven scenes from the fairy tales The Neverending Story by Michael Ende and Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. The selected texts have been worked upon in different ways: sometimes the consonants and vowels have been randomly joined together, at other times the words have been read backwards so that only the symbolic meaning remains. All seven pieces are constructed around a controlling pitch centre, but they are fully differentiated from one another in their means of expression. Each portrays a different situation or emotional state, as describe in the fairy-tales, ranging from the bright to the grotesque. The tunings of some of the instruments are adjusted between a quarter and a sixth of a tone to achieve a refined microtonality. The solo soprano fluctuates between these two tuning systems, depending upon which she is aware of at any time." U.
