recent history of the United States: the girls murdered in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963, and those massacred during the shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015. The first movement sets the poem "Ballad of Birmingham" by Dudley Randall, written from the points of view of one of the Birmingham bombing's young victims and of her mother; the second sets a new text, "The Rain," written for this piece by South Carolina's first poet laureate, Marcus Amaker, in memory of the victims of the Charleston massacre.

Two Black Churches was composed for baritone Will Liverman, who commissioned the piece, and pianist Paul Sanchez, who gave the work its streaming premiere together in June 2020. It offers a contemporary response to Alborada del gracioso, reimagining Ravel's Spanish-inflected style through my own cultural and musical lens. Composed during the 2020–2021 pandemic, the piece reflects both nostalgia for a world paused and hope for one revived. It weaves elements of my Nigerian and African American musical heritage with the fiery rhythms and textures of flamenco, inspired by my travels to the Catalan region of Spain. The piece serves as both a dreamscape and a longing—for movement, cultural exchange, and artistic connection. Listeners may hear echoes of Ravel's influence in the repeated notes, glissandi, and virtuosic flair, all reframed within my Afro-flamenco voice.

Composer: Shawn Okpebholo (1981-)

Instrumentation: Piano

Work: Crooked Shanks

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Crooked Shanks is a solo piano work commissioned by the Newport Classical Music Festival and inspired by the remarkable life of Newport Gardner (born Occramer Marycoo), an enslaved African who became a classically trained musician and the first African American to publish a Western-style composition. Named after his enslaver and the city of his captivity, Gardner overcame tremendous odds—eventually gaining his freedom, achieving success, and returning to Africa. The piece takes its title and inspiration from Gardner's own joyful tune Crooked Shanks, reimagined through my compositional voice. Written for Cuban pianist Aldo López-Gavilán, the work draws on the shared African and Latin musical roots of Gardner, López-Gavilán, and myself. At its heart, the piece is a tribute to resilience, creativity, and the enduring journey toward freedom and home.

Composer: Shawn Okpebholo (1981-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Concert Band

Binding:

UPC: 073999540079

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 60

Description

Explore challenging new territory with Ritual Dances by Shawn E. Tanner, one of the first African American artists to gain international acclaim, often depicted scenes of quiet reflection and deep spirituality—qualities that resonate with my musical language. The painting portrays an elder and a young boy seated in prayerful communion, embodying gratitude amid hardship. I imagine their exchange as a sacred intergenerational moment—rich with stories, wisdom, and silent questions. This piece captures that intimacy through shifting moods: soulful, reflective, animated, and weighty. It's a musical meditation on thankfulness, tenderness, and enduring hope.

Composer: Shawn Okpebholo (1981-)

Instrumentation: Piano, Tenor

Work: Romance (2022)

Binding:

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Commissioned by tenor Lawrence Brownlee, this work, a love song, is my setting of Harlem Renaissance poet Claude McKay's poem Romance, about an intimate night between two lovers. My approach in crafting this piece was not to focus on text painting (though subtle instances are present); rather, I sought to capture the essence of the poem's meaning. Nonaka describes Harvard Square with a single, evocative word: resonance. While "resonance" is a familiar concept in music and sound, it also carries broader, more figurative meanings—evoking images, memories, and emotions. Nonaka beautifully conveys these ideas through her poetry, and through my music, I aimed to embody these layers of resonance as well, using musical colors, soundscapes, and imagery.

Composer: Shawn Okpebholo (1981-)

Format: Vocal Score

Instrumentation: Piano, Soprano, Baritone, Countertenor

Work: Songs in Flight (2022)

Binding: Spiral Bound

Work Language: English

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Songs in Flight is a twelve-movement song cycle for soprano, countertenor, baritone, and piano, inspired by Freedom on the Move—a vast Cornell University archive of over 30,000 newspaper ads seeking to recapture self-emancipated individuals. Curated by Tsitsi Ella Jaji, the text setting includes her own poetry, haiku sequences by Crystal Simone Smith, and a powerful poem by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tyehimba Jess. The music, while cohesive in structure and motif, reflects the poets' varied voices—offering historical narrative, contemporary insight, and personal reflection.
