As Augustine meditates on time and the mind, she journeys through an imagined snowy forest, revisiting moments that shaped her earliest understanding of love, home, and wonder. The cycle weaves together Augustine's philosophical text and the narrator's impossible-to-remember memories, balancing ritualistic musical language with quiet, folk-like simplicity. Through repetition, stillness, and fragile lyricism, the work evokes the beauty and melancholy of a past that exists just beyond reach. Inspired by the wilderness of northern Maine and adapted from Germania and Agricola by Tacitus, the work channels the Roman historian's awed, imperfect vision of distant lands shrouded in perpetual twilight. His writings, shaped by ignorance and wonder, cast the North as a moral landscape: frozen, remote, and pure. Structured in four parts, the music moves from reverence to a more grounded, human voice, exploring how myth and place intertwine. Drawing on a tradition that is both ancient and increasingly rare, the work explores love letters as artifacts of trust, vulnerability, and enduring human connection. By setting Sasha's private words to music she herself performs, composer Scott Ordway reframes the traditional relationships between poet, subject, composer, and interpreter. The score creates an unfolding dialogue between two voices through shifting textures rather than fixed roles, mirroring the complexity of real relationships.
