Thus was born what would become Italian public radio.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first and second movements of Haydn's \"Quartet, Op. 2, No. 1\" were chosen for the inaugural concert. When you think about it, it was a curious choice for a country like ours, which at that time was still completely dedicated to the celebration of opera and moreover was immersed in the Fascist regime, which favored Italian composers and works. But this is what happened: for the first national radio broadcast it was decided to play chamber music by an Austrian composer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePerhaps it was the clarity of Haydn's music, suited to the technology of the time, which was pioneering, still imperfect. Perhaps there were contingent factors I do not know of. in inventing this little quartet of mine to commemorate that date, I liked to think, in an imaginative way, that the choice of that piece was meant to emphasize two of the characteristics that radio, in its cultural version, still proposes to this day: honesty and politeness. I am writing this as a composer, but I could also subscribe to it in my role as a radio host (for almost thirty years, in between composing, I have worked in Italian radio), and I am sure I am not wrong. Because in front of the microphone it is impossible to lie, the voice betrays emotions, the listener understands on the fly whether you are really talking to them or if you are squandering their time with aseptic, useless words; and the best way, the right way to bring music, ideas, thoughts to the thousands of listeners is to deliver them gracefully, seeking exchange, dialogue, civility. Exactly as it happens in the quartets of the classical period and those inspired by it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis little tribute of mine to October 6, 1924, composed one hundred years after The man knew exactly what he wanted: a concerto for piano and orchestra. After some reflection, Campogrande realised that he would be able to paint with music. It would never be possible, of course, to recognise the shape of the woman's face or the colour of her hair, but the score could evoke the way in which she occupied space and time, and the different movements of the composition would be like the faces on a rotating prism. Campogrande thus accepted the commission and the stranger sent him a few photos of his fiancée, spoke to him about her and, finally, introduced him to her. This is how \u003cem\u003eR (A portrait for piano and orchestra)\u003c\/em\u003e was born, first performed in April 2013 by Lilya Zilberstein with the Orchestra Verdi in Milan. Subsequently, following other performances and a TV documentary, a number of different pianists asked Campogrande to write a version for solo piano. Doing that, I created in my mind three special places which correspond to the three movements.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIndeed, the first is ideally put \"On a concert hall rooftop\" where some echoes of great piano concertos of the past come visit the piano part (not their actual notes, rhythms or sounds, but just far memories of themselves) whereas the other instruments are agitated by the pressure of plants that are growing up, by seeds that are unfolding and vegetables that are expanding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second movement is imagined to be \"In a jazz club courtyard\", where the piano is surrounded mostly by winds, brass and percussion instruments. in the main theme there is something resembling a blues-style ballad, but there are other different elements part of the movement, including a variation, where the piano part is in toccata style. The peculiar ability of jazz to devour and transform everything is evoked in the final section: the piano presents some mini quotes of classical repertoire, emphasizing the dialogue between the two worlds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe third movement has its origins in an urban garden created \"On a studio terrace\", and the general form, the musical materials, and some specific instrumental solutions are inspired by the techniques of recording and editing in a studio. An energy that was at times serene, at others brash, but always proudly on display – far removed from the trench warfare stereotype through which we are accustomed to imagining the soldiers of the Great War. of course, the images show uniformed soldiers, surrounded by rifles, mud, and mortar shells. Yet, before the photographer's lens, they also appear as proud members of a military band, drying off in the sun with smiles on their faces after a swim in the river, posing cheerfully with local peasant women, or holding a guitar in hand … I therefore felt that my score – an homage to the protagonists of the First World War – should try to capture this youthful vitality and reflect it through a contemporary sonic landscape: where there was once a brass band, today there might be a DJ or a pop\/rock group at the front; each soldier would hold a smartphone and think in terms of hyperlinks; every gesture would be marked by speed – and so on.I also reflected on the sheer sonic power of battle, and on the sound of gunfire, which, at close range with modern weapons, can reach around 150 decibels. Using that figure as the title struck me as an apt reference for performers, as this piece, in its most intense dynamic passages, asks them to play truly loud. After its debut in Stuttgart, we toured for years through concert halls, schools, and public spaces, giving more than eighty performances. A CD recording later ensured the work's survival even after the ensemble disbanded.In 2025, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano invited me to prepare a new version of the piece for young audiences. I reduced the ensemble, added a string orchestra, and refined certain details without altering the original style.Now a new chapter begins with different performers. What remains essential is what the writer Dario Voltolini identified as the work's central quality in his liner notes for the CD: \"The more I reflect on it, the more I am convinced that the most valuable quality of this festive show, created by Nicola Campogrande from the words of Toti Scialoja, lies in the gentleness with which the refined short-circuits of syllables and phonemes that Scialoja – touched by grace – fashioned in our Italian language are accompanied.\" There it is: gentleness is the key to the interpretation of this score of mine.
