The piece was created as part of the Composer/Choreographer Workshop at the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC., with each of four composers collaborating with each of four choreographers. The performers, including flutist Dorothy Stone and cellist Erica Duke, were drawn from the LA-based E.A.R. The music, which begins with floating flute/cello chords, moves into a dance, by turns whimsical and piquant, before ending on a wave-like chordal rocking that comes gently to rest. Reviewers have singled out the way the music ‘…evokes nymphs, mysteries and pastoral magic…' (Theatre Scene Net), and the way in which ‘…the arch form and flowing music fit perfectly.' They reflect the deep loyalty of the Moabite, Ruth, whose mother-in-law Naomi lost both her husband and two sons in succession. Naomi tells her daughters-in-law to go home to their mothers and shares her hope that they will find husbands there. But Ruth stayed with Naomi and went with her to Bethlehem. The story of the escape of Daedalus, noted for his wonderful sculptures, together with his son Icarus is a compelling one. Imprisoned by King Minos in the labyrinth that Daedalus had designed, and the Minotaur later inhabited, Daedalus searched for a means of escape. He fashioned wings made of bird feathers and wax, and he and Icarus flew away, soaring over the Aegean Sea. But, according to the story, Icarus, heedless of his father's warnings, flew too near the sun, the wax melted and he plunged to a watery grave. This myth has inspired many artists: Bruegel in his Landscape with the Fall of Icarus; Matisse, in The Flight of Icarus; Auden's Icarus; William Carlos Williams's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus; Anne Sexton's To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Triumph; Nino Rota's piano concerto, also named Icarus. There are numerous examples, each with its own twist. My Icarus, composed for violinist Kevin Lawrence in 1983, is cast in four movements. Each was inspired by a different aspect of the story. The first, marked Majestic, is assertive, and confident, with an extended violin cadenza that soars, expressing the will to break barriers, as well as the innocence of one who has not yet had to do so. The second suggests the complex relationships between father and son, now in agreement, now in heated debate. The third hovers in the registral stratosphere, conveying the floating quality of flight, as well as its inevitable turbulence. The last movement shivers with the violence of effort and the catharsis of the plunge. Icarus was recorded by violinist Hasse Borup and pianist Mary Kathleen Ernst on Tower of the Eight Winds, a CD of Shatin's violin/piano music on Innova.

Review: In the movement titled "Majestic" in Shatin's Icarus, a beautiful violin solo with double stops takes your breath away. We can sense the hubris of Icarus in the music as the father-son relationship is translated into a rhythmic and harmonic dialogue between violin and piano. The piano reflects sobriety as the violin expresses youthful enthusiasm. Borup excels here with gorgeous playing in the upper range. In "Delirious," Icarus's second movement, we soon become aware that Shatin creates basically tonal and accessible music as the piano commences a kind of a rag, which seems to me to reflect Icarus and his dad taking turns losing their respective cools. "Soaring" begins with sustained harmonics and rolled chords. The piano seems grounded while the violin soars, and in "Wild"—well, we all know how the story ends. This is a film made up of musical phrases instead of scenes. –David Wolman, Fanfare

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Instrumentation: Flute

Work: Singing Still (1974)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600231034

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note: Singing Still is a slightly revised and retitled version of my earlier Limericks. The piece opens with each instrument handing a single pitch to another, showcasing their individual voices. Jewish Sabbath. The letters of "Chai," which means "life" or "living" in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18; hence, 18 variations. I have given the choice of variation order to the performer as a reflection of my deep sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and composer (and, for that matter, listener). It also reflects my effort to open the musical form. This results in 18! or 6,402,373,705,728,000 possible orderings! The particular order in which the variations are ordered in the grouping below has no bearing on an expected or desired order. One of the joys of creating music for particular performers is the discussion that goes into the process. Early on, when asked if she had any particular ideas that she wished to share, hornist Anne Howarth mentioned salt – how it is essential for life and how it is dissolved in both the tears of our sadness and of joy. This resonated with me, and as I undertook some research into the topic it led me to Pablo Neruda's magnificent ode. in it, he speaks eloquently of the singing of salts on the-flats, the mountain of buried light in the mines, the transparent cathedral, the crystal of the sea and the wonders of its flavor. Salt connects the intimacy of our tongues to the enormity of the oceans. These images and metaphors inspired the harmonic, rhythmic and timbral trajectories of the trio.

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Cello, Violin, Clarinet, Flute, Viola, Bassoon

Work: Spin (1997)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600234905

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

Spin is a one-movement piece whose action manifests the meaning of its title at a variety of levels. It overcomes them to blossom in the summer with delicate white flowers. This provides a rich metaphor for the compositional process, from pushing ideas into shape to their gradual flourishing. Likewise, it embodies the interpretive process, growing from the study and practice that gradually brings performance to fruition. The piece begins with the intensity of seeds taking root and growing. The harmonic substrate gradually changes, ultimately rising in a Major second as the plans reach the light, culminating in an upwards vanishing. I am delighted by my colleagues and dear friends Ay Balija (viola) and I-Jen Fang (percussion) the founders of the innovative Piedmont Duo, not only commissioned this piece, but also enthusiastically collaborated in exploring the marvelous range of their instruments. I am also grateful for the support of this project by the University of Virginia, through the Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures, and UVA Arts Enhancement.

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Instrumentation: Violin, Soprano

Work: Sister Thou Wast Mild and Lovely (1994)

Binding:

Work Language: English

ISMN: 9790600234943

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Soprano or Mezzo-soprano and Viola

Composer's Note:

Sister Thou Wast Mild and Lovely is a setting of the lyrics of a Primitive Baptist hymn by Samuel Francis Smith that I composed in memory of my dear friend, violist Rosemary Glyde. I met Rosemary on my first day at the Aspen Music Festival and we became close friends immediately, with our friendship continuing while students at Juilliard and for the rest of her too-short life. We collaborated on numerous occasions, resulting in a number of pieces. Three of the high points were her performance of Arche for viola and orchestra, with the Houston Symphony, her premiere of Glyph (solo viola, string quartet and piano) at Merkin Hall and her performances of Doxa (viola & piano) and L'etude du Coeur (viola) on her Tully Hall debut. She was a champion of contemporary composers, including Richard Lane and Bernard Hoffer. A fine composer herself, she created Whydah (viola) and Weji, for viola quartet, as well as her transcriptions of the Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata and of J.S. Bach's Cello Suites for viola. I will always miss Rosemary's warm friendship, her adventuresome spirit and her consummate musicality.

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Instrumentation: Cello

Work: Autumn Way (2014)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600235872

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:
Autumn Way, for solo cello, was commissioned by String Poet, an innovative online journal with a Studio Series hosted by the Long Island Violin Shop in Huntington, NY. String Poet ran a poetry competition and paired each winner with a composer commissioned to create music in response to the poetry. We often begin by chatting about ideas, both musical and personal. When Bent Frequency Duo and I first discussed this project, saxophonist Jan Baker mentioned that the topic of water was on her mind - ranging from its life-sustaining necessity to its potential for devastating floods. This immediately resonated with me. Like so many of us, I am deeply concerned about climate change and the increasing severity of drouth and flood cycles.

Of Wells and Springs takes its title (and spelling of drouth) from environmental activist, writer and farmer Wendell Berry's poem, Water. Drawn from the series "Farming: A Handbook," it tells of a terrible drouth, of the narrator's mother waiting for men to bring water from distant springs, of his fear of recurring drought and of his ‘love of wells and springs.' He closes the poem with the line ‘My sweetness is to wake in the night after days of dry heat, hearing the rain.'
I have responded through my music to the experiences that Berry details so vividly – the fear and anguish that drouth precipitates, the joy of the coming of rain, the worry of renewed dry spells, the relief of hearing rain. And, I have added to that both the increasing severity of drouths and the obliterating floods that have also become devastatingly more common.

Percussion Needed:
5 temple blocks,
2 Toms (Low and high), Snare drum, 2 Bongos (low/high), and Vibraphone.

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Flute, Chamber Orchestra

Work: Ruah (1985)

Binding: Spiral Bound

ISMN: 9790600237098

Size: 9.8 x 13.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Flute and Chamber Orchestra:
0110 - 1110 - perc - flute solo - strings

Composer's Note:

Ruah, with the ‘h' pronounced like the ‘ch' in Bach, is a flute concerto inspired by the Hebrew word that translates as air, wind, or breath. in Cabalistic mysticism it also refers to the part of the soul that mediates between the body and the spirit. Both the colloquial and spiritual meanings are at work here. The images of breath and air inform the timbral stretching of the flute's sound, with the flutist using the voice and its breath flow in conjunction with played tones. The image of the wind is captured particularly in the swirling lines of the first movement, marked
Soaring
, and in the third, titled Impassioned
. The second movement,
Tender
emerges from a dynamic stillness, with far-flung registral limits, and large internal spaces. Its three-part organization mirrors the larger-scale three movement plan of the entire piece. The final movement is a more furious spin through space, and reflects a more tightly wound, assertive character than the first two movements. However, it also refers to them. The spiritual reference is embodied in the role of the flute as it variously springs forth from and mediates between the instruments of the ensemble.

Percussion Needed:
Bass drum. large tam-tam, med. sus cymbal, snare drum, tambourine, small triangle, 3 wood blocks (L, M, H) Castanets, mark tree, marimba, vibraphone, crotales .

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Percussion Quintet

Work: Khamsa (2015)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600238125

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

The title,
Khamsa
, which means ‘five' in Arabic, refers to an ancient palm-shaped amulet that has been used as a sign of protection against the ‘evil eye.' When pianist and director Ofer Shelley approached me to create a piece for their upcoming Bialik program, I was particularly drawn to this poem. Written when Bialik was just nineteen and had recently moved to Odessa, there is a strong undercurrent of homesickness for the Biblical land of Israel he imagined. The poem, addressed to a bird that serves as a bridge between the distant land and his current home, is episodic – variously referring to the Bialik's imaginings of this distant land in both its beauty and potential difficulties, while contrasting it again and again with his current perilous situation in Ukraine. His ruminations move back and forth, taking flight like the winging bird he calls to, yet also crashing down on his current reality. My response to the poem became a song without words, with the flight of the bird sometimes soaring, while at other times caught in the darker net of Bialik's worry before taking wing again.

Composer: Judith Shatin (1949-)

Instrumentation: Cello

Work: Sursum Corda (1981)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600231010

Size: 8.9 x 11.9 inches

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

Sursum Corda
is a versicle of Thanksgiving in the Catholic liturgy.
