on the ballad The Two Sisters, which appears and re-appears in folklore all over northern Europe and in North America (where it turns up, in at least one manifestation, as a bluegrass number).

Each version has its own idiosyncratic details, depending on the local culture and geography. However, the basic outline of the story remains the same:

A suitor comes to woo the fairer of two sisters. The other (dark) sister is consumed with jealousy and takes the fair one for a walk by the waterside in order to push her in. The fairer sister drowns and her body is swept away, leaving the dark one free to pursue the suitor. Meanwhile, the body is washed up on a nearby shore, where it is found by a rapacious miller who plunders it. Later it is rediscovered by a blind musician who fashions an instrument from it, using the bones for the frame and the hair for the strings.

The musician goes on his way, carrying his new instrument, until he comes to a wedding feast which is celebrating the marriage of the suitor and the dark sister. He is invited to play for the couple but, before he can lay his hands on the strings, the instrument itself sings the story of the murder. Enraged, the wedding guests turn on the dark sister and put her to death – burying her alive in the ground as her sister was buried alive in the water.

Bow Down is a story of enormously powerful images – horrific in its details of sibling rivalry, mutilation, torture and murder and yet also transcendent in the way that music is perceived as being capable of overcoming death in order to reveal the truth.

Clearly, as with all good legends or fairy stories, the myth is capable of any number of interpretations – Marxist, Freudian and Feminist among them. But Bow Down does not set out to make that sort of intervention. It rather presents us with a collage of different versions, sometimes overlapping, sometimes contradicting each other. The focus keeps changing, as does the diction (the show includes Scottish, Northumbrian and Danish versions, amongst others) and the detail. By constantly shifting the angle of vision, Harrison Birtwistle has created a piece that is, in a way, cubist. and yet, it's also a rattling good story.

In fact, Bow Down sits squarely in the story-telling-tradition. It is not a play where the music has the role of providing atmosphere or 'numbers'. Nor is it an opera, in which dramatic personae appear on stage while the music comes from a separate 'pit' band. It can only really be classified as music-theatre, a term appropriated by a very diverse range of material but which can perhaps best be defined as 'work whose dramatic content is purposeless without the music and whose music is meaningless without the dramatic content.'

It is therefore a highly collaborative piece, originally created through a workshop process at the National Theatre in 1977. Composer, poet, director, actors and musicians worked together to devise a piece based on the original ballad texts. The final 'script' or 'score' was not put together until after the event.

Graham Devlin

Composer: Harrison Birtwistle (1934-2022)

Format: Study Score

Instrumentation: Orchestra

Work: Sonance Severance 2000

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060112522

Size: 8.2 x 11.6 inches

Pages: 9

Composer: Harrison Birtwistle (1934-2022)

Format: Full Score

Instrumentation: Orchestra

Work: The Triumph of Time

Binding:

ISMN: 9790008059223

Size: 11.7 x 16.5 inches

Pages: 54

Description

Harrison Birtwistle is one of the triumvirate of composers who formed the Manchester Group in the fifties. Peter Maxwell Davies and Alexander Goehr, the other two, were soon to find success outside their immediate sphere, but it has taken Birtwistle much longer. in fact it was not until 1965, when his Tragoedia for ten players was given at Wardour Castle, that he became known to a wider public. Since then his development has been rapid, and The Triumph of Time is one of the most recent fruits of an extremely fertile period. It was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and first performed by it at a concert in June last year [1972]. Many regard it as one of the most important orchestral scores to have been composed by an Englishman during the last decade or so. Some of his colleagues among the younger generation of composers even regard it as flawless – if music can ever be said to be flawless. Yet Birtwistle doesn't put a foot wrong in it. From every aspect the score ‘works', and when it is over one is left with the impression of an event that has been powerful, stimulating and totally integrated.

The Triumph of Time is based on an allegorical painting by the sixteenth-century Flemish artist, Pieter Bruegel. Bruegel's picture shows the figure of Time riding in a cart surrounded by marauding bands of skeletons. The landscape is ravaged and the canvas is covered with manifold images of death. Birtwistle transfers these images to the present. We are invited to watch a slow funeral cortege as it passes us by. As spectators and listeners we are involved and yet uninvolved with the action at one and the same moment. Time is the inescapable mode of our existence and death our ultimate destination: thus we are involved. But there are moments when we can remove ourselves from the inevitability of time, moments when we can stand back from ourselves, moments when we can observe events with passive objectivity. The funeral cortege may be symbolic and activate our empathy or horror, but it may also be an event moving towards us and past us at a speed which allows us to contemplate only the gradual metamorphoses of visual planes. in other words, we are the observers of an event in slow motion.

Recently Birtwistle has been fascinated by slow-motion techniques. in La Plage, the work he composed in 1972 immediately after The Triumph of Time, he takes a simple, hauntingly static story by Alain Robbe Grillet and subjects it to the technique of a slow-motion film sequence. The use of slow-motion in the cinema is usually confined to dream sequences. Time is suspended, the real becomes unreal. Such sequences are highly sensuous. Our attention is focused on a movement which does not obey the normal measure of time. We are plunged into a dimension where reason gives way to the magic of the erotic. So in Birtwistle the macabre and the sensuous share the same bed.

Is this the reason why The Triumph of Time is cast as a huge funeral march of Mahlerian proportions? From the very opening, harp lower strings and horns start a momentum that moves extremely slowly and, for the most part, extremely quietly. Gradually the music unfolds towards a shattering climax, behind which the strings hold a widely-spaced chord of hushed stillness. Then the sounds die away and we are left with the hallow noise of a bass-drum roll. The sounds are mostly clusters of tightly knit strings or brass, but from time to time come thrice important ideas that stand out from the rest of the textured. These are a long melody on the cor anglais, a high piercing cry from the soprano saxophone, and a muted fanfare from the trumpets. It is these recurring ideas which give us our bearing in the flux of Birtwistle's time. They are never the same, they always undergo metamorphoses, but they are the elements which we can grasp and make our own through recognition. Time may have its triumph, but there are moments when we can defy it. Such moments are those contained in a work of art of compulsive beauty.

Michael Hall, 1973

Universal Picasso's own Construction with Guitar Player was an installation of a partially drawn and painted figure to which he added arms made of newspaper that fold away from the wall to embrace a real guitar. in the foreground stands a table with a bottle of wine and this was photographed by Picasso in his studio in 1913.

Musically, Birtwistle's Construction is a large scale, dense work of sixteen minutes duration. It does not develop linearly, but presents fragments of detail, interruptions, digressions and loops as a "deconstructed guitar" in sound.

Librettist: David Harsent

Binding:

ISBN: 9780851625553

Pages: None

This opera by British composer Harrison Birtwistle (b.1934) and librettist David Harsent (b.1942) premiered in London on April 15, 2008.

Composer: Harrison Birtwistle (1934-2022)

Instrumentation: Harp

Work: Crowd

Binding:

ISMN: 9790060118517

Size: 9.0 x 12.0 inches

Pages: 16
