The first movement, "Midstream" begins as if we encounter the music already midway, much how we might encounter a stream in motion. The second movement, "Isolation" - written during a bout with COVID - explores the feelings of isolation, loneliness, and yearning. and the final movement, "Carry On" snaps us out of isolation reminding us to keep going on with life. I wanted to make this piece special and took my time with it as there was no set performance date and wrote the work from the fall of 2017 to the end of 2018, with other works being written and a move back to NYC having occurred during that time.

I constantly assess and reflect on my music and this piece is the realization of my reflections. The work contains lyrical passages with extended jazz-inspired harmonies in the first movement. The second movement utilizes mixed driving pulses and tunes, fragmented or fully realized. The interlude is what I like to describe as abstract nostalgia, chords that float in a soundscape and that can evoke sentiments within the listener. and the final movement is - as it seems to me - an organic development out of what occurred before: a heartfelt song for viola.

Composer: Gilbert Galindo (1982-)

Format: Score & Set of Parts

Instrumentation: String Quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello)

Work: La esperanza de la gente

Binding:

Pages: None

Description

Composer's Note:

"La esperanza de la gente" was commissioned by Access Contemporary Music for the Relevant Tones podcast in honor of Jovita Idár, a Mexican-American journalist, activist, and suffragist who lived in the first half of the 20th century and was featured in the current New York Times Overlooked obituary series. Jovita Idár predated the Chicano civil rights movement of the '60s and '70s by nearly half a century, bringing to attention issues that are important: education, equal rights, fair treatment of Mexican-Americans, and freedom of the press. Her advocacy work even caused a confrontation with the Texas Rangers, who sought to destroy the printing press of "El Progreso", a newspaper for which she worked. On the first day of the encounter, she bravely stood in front of the offices, preventing the Texas Rangers from destroying the printing press, but the next day they succeeded. This did not stop her from continue advocating for equal rights for Mexican-Americans in Texas as she became a great role model for any who seek to advocate for justice.

"La esperanza de le la gente" gives several moods of reflection, celebration, alienation, sweetness, and a bit of vigor. I said yes and was excited to take on this commission. Vincent shared with me articles about his grandfather, family, and the Texas Hill Country. I really enjoyed reading about Vincent's family and grandfather, and I could tell his Ito was a great man with great integrity and character, and one who naturally lived out his Mexican-American identity and culture, which to me as a Tejano/Chicano myself is special and reminded me my upbringing and family. Being a native of West Texas, I have driven through Hill Country and have found it serene with a calming beauty. Armed with the experience of learning about his grandfather along with my experience of Hill Country and my own Tejano upbringing, I set down to write.

In "Los Cerros Hablan" ("The Hills Speak"), I felt the need for a deep lyrical quality throughout the whole work. As a composer, the energy and sentiment of a piece are one of the most important elements with which I am occupied, and what transpires in this piece are smooth floating melodies with a tinge of melancholy in the beginning. One could say the smooth floating melodies capture the spirit in the air of Hill Country and can speak to the loving sentiments his Ito elicited from his loved ones. The melancholy can speak to the struggles of immigrants and the passing on from this world to the next. Another wonderful aspect of this commission coincides with my concerted embrace of using Mexican melodic cadences and inflections in my classical music as I set out to personally explore what my own Mestizo or Chicano classical music can be. I incorporated this embrace in the piece with soft echoes of hints of ranchera music, which his Ito loved (and which is one of my favorite Mexican music genres as well). I am very happy to have worked on this new piece for Vincent and to contribute to the bassoon and piano repertoire.
"Los Cerros Hablan", lyrical fantasy for bassoon and piano was commissioned by Vincent TyRaudel Martinez and Wright State University.

Composer: Gilbert Galindo (1982-)

Format: Set of Parts

Instrumentation: Chamber Ensemble

Work: Turning Point (2024) (clarinet, mandolin, elec. guitar, elec. bass, piano, drum set)

Binding:

ISMN: 9790600234639

Size: 8.9 x 12.0 inches

Pages: None

Description

Clarinet, Mandolin, Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Piano, and Drum Set

Composer's Note:

"Turning Point" for clarinet, drums, mandolin, guitar, piano, & bass could be considered as a more lyrical and groove-oriented companion work to my earlier "Spunk" for saxophone, guitar, violin, and bass which has been described as chamber jazz.
