Description

The Barroqueanas Venezolanas are a series of concertos inspired by the "Bachianas Brasileiras"—a work by Heitor Villa-Lobos—and the Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach. in all four concertos, one or two soloists perform, accompanied by strings, harpsichord, and cuatro (a Venezuelan four-stringed guitar), which can optionally be replaced by a baroque guitar. The rhythmic material and some harmonic sequences used in these concertos are derived from Venezuelan folk music. However, the forms and performance are based on the traditional baroque concerto.

The first piece in the series, Barroqueana Venezolana No. 1, premiered on November 12, 2015, in Lisbon, Portugal. in this concerto, flute and violin appear as soloists, imitating Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. However, unlike in Bach's works, the harpsichord is not one of the soloists, but rather a very important part of the accompanying music.
