Description

The Big Country remains one of the most famous and influential American western films of all time. The poster tagline said it all: 'Big they fought! Big they loved! Big their story!' The epic western, directed by William Wyler and starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carrol Baker, Charlton Heston, and Burl Ives, was based on the serialized novel Ambush at Blanco Canyon by Donald Hamilton. The plot centers around a New Englander (Peck) who arrives at his fiancée's ranch in Texas only to find himself in the middle of two rival ranching families, locked in a violent feud over access to a river.

The score by Jerome Moross (The Cardinal, The War Lord, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Proud Rebel) undoubtedly changed the landscape of western movie scores, veering towards a distinctly American-flavored sound suggestive of the music of Moross' friend Aaron Copland. The composer attributed his unique sound to his first experience traveling across the Great Plains in 1936, a journey he described in great detail: 'I got to the edge of town and walked out on the flat land with a marvelous feeling of being alone in the vastness with the mountains cutting off the horizon.'
