the way we feel and think about our own existence. This certainly was the case with me following the death, in 2005, of my Mother. A few months prior, my brother Gavin suggested that I might like to write a work for his choir, the Athenaeum Singers of Warminster. Despite not being a religious person in the formal sense of the word, I felt strangely drawn to writing a Requiem as it gave me the opportunity to express my love and gratitude to a woman who gave me everything. I wished to avoid the terrors of the Last Judgement and preferred my work to be an intimate one, reflecting feelings of peace, love and compassion. Therefore, I chose not to follow the standard Requiem Mass but have included words from other literary sources; a poem by St.Teresa of Avila and a love poem by the American poet Jack Larson, a poem As someone who struggles with a belief in God, I have, nonetheless, always had an underlying fascination, a love, in fact, of Jesus Christ and the journey leading to his eventual demise; I feel a passionate response to him as a unique and individual man.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe poem, \u003cem\u003eStabat Mater Dolorosa\u003c\/em\u003e , is considered by many to be one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. Copley. Ben was mightily impressive and as I'd long thought of writing a Trombone Concerto I set about writing one for him. I love the powerful big-boned sound of the trombone, as we all do, but also its surprising agility and ability for playing more quietly sustained passages - perfect for a concerto. Having completed the work a few months later, I went to meet with Ben at the Guildhall School of Music \u0026amp; Drama in London where he was in his final year, and he played through the piece, but also offered up various alternatives to what the trombone can achieve if you ignore the standard text books, and he helped in re-arranging some of the trickier passages which proved a revelation, and which I then incorporated into the concerto.
