Description

Running approximately fourteen minutes, Blackbird Variations is a continuous, single-movement work for solo piano that draws on both literary and natural inspirations. The structural framework is directly derived from Wallace Stevens' poem "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird," with each of the work's thirteen variations corresponding to a specific stanza of the text.

Musically, the composition is built upon a transcribed snippet of actual blackbird song consisting of just three pitches: A, F, and B. To mirror the austere imagery of Stevens' poetry, the composer utilizes the harmonically ambiguous nature of this three-note motif to craft shifting, evocative atmospheres throughout the piece. Though played without pause, the variations are organized into three larger, overarching sections (stanzas I-V, VI-IX, and X-XIII), each forming its own distinct structural arc.
